Cutting on Wax

A spot for keeping track of especially cool (informative, fun) videos, photos, scans and other links about record cutting. (You can post them in other sections. Eventually they may end up here.) NOTE: Please put *Circuits, Schematics and Manuals* in the section with that name.

Here you go mossy! :D

voiceover translation:

"Here a piece of music is transferred from magnetic tape to a wax disc. The electric vibrations are engraved to the wax with a saphire. The steady work of the stylus is monitored continuosly with a microscope.

What a pity, there's an imperfection in the wax, back to the wax kitchen. The recording wax is boiled and poured into containers. After cooling down the blanks are centered and ground on a turning lathe. Later it is polished in order to obtain a mirror-like surface. The quality of the wax disk is of crucial importance to the quality of the final product.

These small pieces of silver in the high vacuum are electrically melted and vaporized. In the process a very thin silver layer builds on the engraved surface of the wax disk. The silver- coated disk is put into a galvanic bath and develops a copper layer on top through electrolysis.

What's this?

This black powder consists mainly of shellac, synthetic resins, slate powder, silica and black colour. The powder is processed in a steam-heated rolling mill to a workable dough. A so-called Kalander rolls out the dough and makes small bars. These bars are called blanks. The cooled down blanks are re-heated before processing. The two stampers that mould the record are placed in the machine. The labels and the blank are inserted in the press, and under high pressure a record forms. This press produces 500 records daily. "
