scully LS-76 Nr. 666

That's interesting; I didn't know he first copied the Lindstrom design (trolley turntable and stationary recorder). I would assume this would be similar to the machines the Sooy brothers used at Victor as well, at least early on. There is another photo somewhere of a lathe body similar to the one above with a weight drive attached and a mechanical recorder mounted in a saddle on the sled. Sort of a smaller, more primitive version of the larger modern Scully lathe. Will see if I can locate it.

John J. died in or about 1950, from what I've read, as the first automatic variable pitch / depth lathe was being developed and on the verge of being introduced; the models thereafter (such as the post-1955 model 601) were designed and its mechanics worked out under Larry J.'s aegis.Serif wrote:When did Larry J. start designing and when did John J. stop?
The company that developed and made the LS-76 was unrelated to the company that sold 501's, 601's and everywhere in-between as well as (in the case of the 501) before. The LS-76's manufacturer was the L.J. Scully Manufacturing Corp.; the prior company, Scully Recording Instruments Corp., was by then part of Dictaphone and its manufacturing base long moved to California (and also pretty much making only tape machines).

OK guys, don't rush to answer. Serial number found. It's #668.
EDIT : A better photo reveals that is actually Serial No. 662 so the mystery still remains.

There is, however, a significant likelihood that Mr. Scully was indeed superstitious... what would he do in such case? No idea! Perhaps just skip the number to make sure he doesn't end up in the wrong place...
