Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Hi,
Did you try a capacitor soldered right at the motor terminals? .1uf 50V or greater ceramic would be a good choice to start with. How long are the leads from the motor to the power supply? Are they twisted?
Finally, since it seems the power amp is picking up the interference, can you try another brand of amp?

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Hi Mark,
Soldering a capacitor will definatly fix the motor noise issue but I would not bother with this as the motor is incased in a thick aluminium tube and covered with silicon with little access.
Also David could accidently damage something.
I did too replace the German power plugs to Aussie plugs and to be honest thats when I noticed the whine noise from the motor.
During the fault finding process I did try everything that Mark suggested in this thread and even replacing the 12v power supply and the amplifier to a good quality one and that made no difference.
After a few days I tried the behringer HD 400 first I placed it between the mixer output to the optimiser silent cut with Amp on had no luck then placed the box between the last output that inputs into the amp
With successful results.

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Yes we added a capacitor last night just before the motor silicone. Did not resolve the issue.
We spent a good 3 hours last night. Pulled the top off the main unit.
We were surprised that Souri had soldered power to the Eq (RIAA) part of the main unit and the groove speed motor/Diamond heat.
My friend thinks it would have been better for Souri to have a seperate power supply for each one individually - what do you guys think?
We unsoldered the power to the Eq in the main unit and PRESTO.. The motor pitch sound was gone. Completely gone.
Next step for us to to try powering the Eq and Groove speed motor/Stylus heat independently. We will be back!!

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Ps: Souri had also sanded off part numbers - a wise move I guess in a business sense!
Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
This is great news, David.David34 wrote: We unsoldered the power to the Eq in the main unit and PRESTO.. The motor pitch sound was gone. Completely gone.
The questions is - when you usoldered EQ, you have unsoldered RIAA with onboard EQ (bass, mid, treble, gain) or just EQ? Why 'm asking - I always wanted to bypass onboard EQ but save the RIAA.
Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Hi guys..
Well it has definitely worked.
So you know what we did to the main unit:
Unsoldered the power cables to the RIAA and EQ (Which was crazily piggy-back powered from the groove speed motor - a foolish move)
Found out what load was needed to power the RIAA and EQ independently. Used a separate power supply for the RIAA/Eq.
VOILA.. Pitch sound gone.
Really appreciate all the useful help that I have come across since this thread started. I really hope this does help a VR user in future.

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Hi David,
Could you let us know what load figures you came up with to power the RIAA and EQ circuits please?
I admit that other user's main units may differ and so may have different power needs, but it'd give us a place to start.
Thanks

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
We just soldered in another power supply unit on 12v..
Sorted the issue and literally the quietest cuts ever now.. Well worth opening up the main unit to see how it has been piggy-backed.
Probably works ok in some countries but did not work here in oz..

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Thanks David,
That new PSU, what's the max current it's rated for at 12 volts please?

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Glad you found a solution.
If you rack up all of your units, a ground loop is created. I'm not sure why Souri doesn't isolate the power better, but it is what it is.
My Solution was to unrack each unit. They now free stand and have rubber feet so no metal is touching from unit to unit, thus killing the ground loop.
Cheers,
J

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
We also tried isolating each of the units and the leak remained.. Maybe it's an Aussie thing?
Anyway all solved.
When I get home from holidays I will post a photo and description of how we resolved this issue for other trolls to use.
I do have to say that it has made my cuts so much better - a definite improvement that Souri should adapt into the VR.

Hi David
Nice Job on fault finding the motor noise issue.
Happy cutting

He did not found the motor noise, he found ground loop in rack gear.Dubcutz wrote:Hi David

You can't rid of motor noise.
Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Thanks for clearing the air sat159
Could you please provide us a sound file sample of the motor noise Issue your referring too since David's issue is related to a ground loop problem
This would help us vinyl recorder uses.

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
I now have no motor noise at all??
And I isolated all hardware from the rack prior and still had motor noise. Wasn't an Earth loop - it was the fact that the power to the Groove speed motor and Stylus heating was piggy backed off and supplying power to the RIAA and EQ in Main unit.
Problem was solved immediately. RIAA/EQ now has its own 12v power supply fed in through the back of the case.

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
At the risk of repeating myself, could you let me know what current (Amps) your new PSU is rated for please?
i.e. the one which now feeds power to your main unit's iRIAA/EQ circuits.
Thanks in advance

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Dubcutz, yeah, well, maybe I spelled it wrong. David explained it.
You can do a test yourself. Record blank with no music (even with everything - but main unit - disconnected) - start recording and put the groove speed dial on between 0-10, after a while raise it to 100. You'll hear that motor speed change when playing the record.
If groove motor works faster = it generates more self noise. This can't be muted by adding spearate supply etc. Motor is in the alloy tube and it'snt related to ground loops/power supply etc. It's just a little downside of this contruction. And I've tried to explain it here in couple posts…

Hi SueDenim,
When I am home from holidays I will let you know what I used.
Apologies for the slackness!

Re: VinylRecorder Groove speed motor noise through record
Thanks David to have taken a calculated risk some of us didn't dare try....
When I first had my VR, I had so many noise problem...ground loops... motor speed noise... and all of what people are describing. I had notice that there was power going to both boards in the main unit.... the RIAA-eq and also the motor.... I felt it was a little strange but never tried anything... as I was sure the RIAA and EQ was passive.... Mark explained a lot to me but I never felt the courage enough to cut the lead and plug it on it's own power.
Thanks for you help, it's more than appreciated...
Cheers
Ben
ps: Do you think that this can cause problems if you have the distance groove controller Souri's selling.... to have both separated?
