Diamond and no dashpot?
Has anyone done any cutting with a Presto 1C/D using a diamond (on polycarbonate) without a dashpot? I know you'd probably have to be very careful to watch for oscillations.... does anyone have any experience with this?
Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
Maybe I'll widen this question a bit.. who has experience cutting with a diamond on polycarbonate on ANY lathe without a dashpot? If there's no oscillations, is there anything else to really worry about?
Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
I'm going to be honest and say I don't know of anyone else cutting polycarb on a Presto with a diamond just yet?
please correct me if I'm wrong.
when I get to that point, I'll try to help out with what I find, but at this point I'm just embossing (impressing) on polycarb with a sapphire.

Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
I know when I've tried cutting acrylic with a sapphire I've never had any problems with oscillation... which leads me to believe that the same would hold true for a diamond cutting poly. Maybe even be less of a problem because the diamond would cut better than a sapphire with the burnishing facets in plastic.

Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
hmm, don't know if anybody tried without...
but spending 5$ for bolts, washers, a bottle-cap and some salad oil to reduce the risk of killing a 250$ diamond is one of the cheapest things someone could do to prevent from headaches...
just my opinion...

Wanted: ANYTHING ORTOFON related to cutting...thx
Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
Yah, I think I'm going to do that. The problem is that my home brew lathe doesn't really have a good way to attach a dashpot. But I think I'm going to find a way because I don't want to risk it.
Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
nice to stay on the side of caution in this case.
make sure to use a really flat poly blank, proper heat (lamp or stylus), some lubricating oil, and you should be fine.

Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
hey hey !
I'm done with vinylike's diamond on my R-O-K M-12
Of course I've no dashpot yet, but would like to have. Do anyone saw small dampers that can be used somewhere?
This is first time when I heard about that oscillations so I'm lucky and still not understand what is it
I want to say that I'm very happy with result, quiet and deep groove, I'm just waste year of experimenting with embossing Not connect heating yet, as vinylike's one very short but use lamp to reach about 50C
Other question how long will last this happiness, let's see.
Thanks Trolls !!!

Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
yes use a dashpot.
very easy to make.
showed in other threads already. but maybe you did not found it.
i think the parts you find everywhere in the world....go and pick it up early in the morning on streets....hehe
cap is from a vodka bottle. the damper is from a beer.
oil was salad oil from the festival kitchen.
works great.
built that when disk-o-mat was used on a openair festival with very ruff user conditions. most users where super drunk
and they went into the recording booth by 3 or 4 people. shaking as hell. so we definitely needed some dampening.
happy bricolage

Re: Diamond and no dashpot?
I have doing some testing with air dash pots as apposed to oil based I found a company in the USA who sent me a free sample? Anybody tried one of these?

Not sure if this is helpful but RCA did some tests with an air daspot on lacquers however it explains how it helps.
