2nd owner Presto 6N for sale
OK, I've already been told I'm crazy for even offering this on this forum, but here goes. I need to sell this machine and most people will think this isn't real, or I'm crazy, not for real, or whatever. Sorry, this machine is for real, and if any of you have any idea of what you're looking at, here goes... This is a radio station Presto 6N (serial number 2047) which has been progressively restored since 1976, with some modifications made for better quality recordings. I am only the second owner of this machine, having purchased it from the original owner, WTSO (formerly WKOW) radio in 1976 (I was 15 years old at the time). If Hale Blakeley (the transmitter engineer I met and purchased the machine from) hadn't died a couple of years ago, I could have had any of you call him to verify that I truly am only the second owner of this 6N.
The 1-C head has been rebuilt with new damping material and is wired for 500 ohm operation (please read on). The pickup tests good. The machine has the original idler wheels; the 33 wheel has been re-rubbered by Terry at Terry's Rubber Rollers, and while the 78 wheel is there, it has a flat spot. No one really uses 78, but Terry can rebuild it for around $60 if needed. The machine can be driven by idler wheel, or by external belt drive. With the belt drive, you can cut a dead quiet groove without much flutter or instability. The machine comes with four feedscrews - 96, 112, 136 and 224 lines per inch, outside in. The original time scale is included, but does not fit on the overhead with the suction pipe attached. The suction pipe works well with lacquer discs, but not well with plastic - too much static. There is a tube and chip jar included that can be attached to a suction pump or vacuum. Included is an electronically restored, rack mountable 92A amplifier in excellent condition, for driving the 500 ohm head. The face plate is not original, but obviously does not affect operation - cosmetics only.
Also included is a digital B/W camera, with a microscope adapter and black and white monitor that can be attached to the microscope for watching cutting in real time. The lathe bed has had some additional connections installed to accommodate all the add-ons which make this setup capable of cutting extremely high quality mono recordings. You can make arrangements to pick up or have a machine moving service pick it up for you. I wouldn't suggest motor freight or UPS/Fedex for something like this. Everything will be packed well to travel. Any reasonable offer for a machine of this quality will be considered. Photos are below. In order to be fair to everyone, please PM me with a REASONABLE offer.

Re: 2nd owner Presto 6N for sale
It is beautiful and I have no doubt. I have the suitcase version. Got mine in 1988 I'm owner number 2 also. I have the receipt from Seattle Radio Supply long gone now. dated 1941 with 85E amp that was gone with I arrived on the scene. I'd love it but know it's rather off my plate.

Re: 2nd owner Presto 6N for sale
I was hoping to get between $4000 - $5000, but again, make me an offer. Remember that I don't recommend shipping this unit - I wouldn't want UPS or Fedex to destroy it like they did an Edison Triumph years ago. I once used a machine moving service to have a TP-66 moved from Chicago to here; I *think* it was called Eric's Machine Movers, but it's been about 8 years ago. He was very reasonable for such a large, heavy machine (over 400 lbs). I think he charged $300 for that - would be less for this lathe and amp.

BTW, I also have a Presto model E, Presto Jr. and two K recorders for sale, just haven't got around to taking pictures yet. These are also in very good condition. Again, definitely not e-Bay quality machines.

Beautiful machine, and excellent upgrades/restoration! You hardly ever see an original plinth these days, let alone one that isn't a rusted-out old hulk. I hadn't considered removing the 78 stop entirely like that - maybe that will get my 6N to properly engage at high speed for once...
Quick question: it looks like you've got a new rubber mat on the platter. What did you use for the new material?

Re: 2nd owner Presto 6N for sale
Actually the 78 stop was missing when I got the machine. At the time I was so young I really didn't know what the other (33) side was for so I didn't ask Hale why it was missing. Here is a photo of it in full operation:
The mat is new as well as the rubber on the drive hub. I also replace the rubber springs on the overhead rest with a new piece of rubber. I don't recall where I ordered the material, but it's sheet neoprene. A little thicker than the original which helps when you're using the idler drive - cuts down on noise transmitted up through the turntable.

Re: 2nd owner Presto 6N for sale
It looks like an average price for everything here is $3500 - I figured a little more, but I'm not unreasonable. No one here seems interested, but will keep it available here until the end of the month. Again, reasonable offers are still acceptable.
