Hello everyone. This is my first time here. I usually work with sound and music for moving image and radio whilst being involved with electronic music since the late 80's. I'm now venturing into vinyl cutting as a complete novice with no experience, but who has been around cutting rooms and mastering studios through running a record label.
I'd very much like to know what the seasoned and non seasoned cutters have in their cutting gear chain and which order it runs in.
I will be heading out to Souri around August for my training before investing in his cutter.
But at the moment I work mainly in the box with Prism ad-dc converters and pmc monitors.
I'd also like to know if inserting my prism into the cutting chain is possible to improve the cut and at which point would I insert the prism.
Thank you everyone.
Ross

Re: Newbie question on gear chain
souri's chain is completely adequate, if unexciting. he cuts from cd as an audio source, but if you are using your prism, you can just hook that up instead. depending on how you have everything set up, you can probably eliminate most of his electronics over time, but i would advise cutting a few records with the stock setup first and wrapping your head around it before making adjustments. ultimately you could probably just go prism -> amp -> cutterhead but there's alot to work out before then.

Hi Okpanda,
Thanks for this info.
Yes i'll for sure be working with the stock gear.
I'm intrigued by why you say unexciting. Could you elaborate?

Re: Newbie question on gear chain
he just makes very plain, functional choices. many people will point to the modified budget dj mixer that he includes as something that *technically works* but that you will want to get rid of it as soon as you see it. it isn't very sexy out of the box, but it isn't really meant to be. it's an entry level system meant to be improved upon.
