Vinyl up

AV Club has an article on Music sales and says vinyl sales are accelerating! (When you've got nothin', you've got nothin' to loose...)

music sales overall are up 8.5 percent from 2010, with digital tracks up 11 percent, digital albums up 19 percent, and vinyl albums up a truly impressive 41 percent. (Both Fleet Foxes’ Helplessness Blues and The Beatles’ Abbey Road have sold 20,000 vinyl copies this year.)

yep something is going good about vinyl.

most here in Lithuania we had 1 vinyl shop maybe 2 in whole country.

last year till now maybe 5 vinyl shops opened over the country. And last year there was 20 releases of local jazz label and 2 vinyls in pop music. This year has more to come as I know.

So yes. it seams like it is growing.

Are these strictly US numbers, or worldwide?

Seems all genres(even country) doing strong on vinyl in 2011 here in USA.
Curious if there is a way to understand how many 7" have been released in USA/Canada in the past year.

The DJ based vinyl sales have stayed about the same the past few years. There has been an increase in DJ vinyl release titles but not overall sales. The mixture of DJs still playing vinyl and the collectors have more records to choose from.

unfortunately if i look at the clubs maybe 10 % of the djs play vinyl.
hey just bought a new bob Marley. made in the us. 180 gram.
there are some plants in the usa which do absolutely top work.
I have a few must be from the same plant.
awesome sounding, totally flat, all 180 grams. clean, no scratches, no little bubbles, awesome print, label and cover.
anyway
cheers

Nielsen data indicates about 3 million records sold in the USA About 1/4 if not less In my view
The Nielsen data of the data is from scanned bar coded product
Individual band sales as well as on line sales or direct are not accounted for
Any way If I was to take an educated guess I would have thought that about 40 Million records worldwide is closer to the mark
How is that?
Well simple
1.GZ via a post here by our member Jiri 5.5 Million records last year
2.RI in Holland as a guess that many again or may be a bit less or a little more as there is 32 presses there
3.My little collection of small plants pressed about 1.5-1.8 million
4.MPO in France an educated guess its good for another 3 million
What is not hard to estimate is another 2-3 million from the following plants:
Celebrate Records
My 45
Ameise Vinylpresserei
Rand Muzik
Optimal Media Production
Master Media Productions
Pallas Group
So without even going across the ocean there is a number of over 15 million.
Once we have looked at plants USA based ones where there are quite a few the Nielsen figures are very questionable
URP and RTI in the USA are both fair size plants so I would have thought another 5 Million pressings from these two plants would not be an unreasonable figure
Than we have the following known pressing plants:
Quality Record Pressing
Capsule Labs
Hitbound Manufacturing
Gotta Groove Records
Rainbo Records
EKS Manufacturing
Palomino Records, Inc.
Musicol Recording
Brooklynphono
Erika Records
Bill Smith Custom Records
A & R Record Manufacturing
Archer Record Pressing
That's another 13 plants operating so as an average of say .5 Million per year each there is another 6 million odd records
So in the above mix of guess work come factual no's I make about
26 Million records on the conservative side of the equation
Knowing what it takes to keep the doors open I would have thought the USA pressing figure amongst the second list of plants to be closer to 10 Million rather than the 6 Million I am allowing
My guesstimate would be over 30 million with a very high level of confidence getting to 40 million if all the other plants in the world are taken into account
In so far as what genre of music?
It seems that it is across the board with even Jazz re issues achieving very reasonable numbers
And why is that? Well the majors are not making money like they used to so re issuing back catalogue is a good way of getting some profit in the door
Bands do not want to do CD as the revenues from there are meagre due to pirating and downloads are certainly proven to be a total failure
Youth today expect music for free as there is a conditioning due to the internet as well as sites that relay on advertising which offer free downloads of anything and everything
Besides the vinyl record buyer who has never left the medium as well as the upsurge some years back with the DJ scene there is a movement now days towards the medium that has a hip factor as well as curiosity from younger people Once there they seem to stay with it
Who wants or has a collection of CD's any way and dad's big black CD's are funny but sound real good
A common statement? Do they still make them?
Well we still do
Finally:
Input on the figures as well as reasonable arguments as to their validity would be welcomed
Cheers
Chris

The article says North America...

...from 1.3 to 1.9 Million sales noted by Neilson SoundScan 2011 Mid-year report.

OK so here's the another thing!

There are thousands of LABELS who don't use the SOUNDSCAN/BARCODE system, so add that into there as well.

:D
