Dashpot Oil - What Are You Using?

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Dashpot Oil - What Are You Using?

I thought it might be a helpful resource for anyone using oil based dashpots and need to find a replacement oil, or for a new DIY set up etc, just one thread with what people are using for referencing.

I cut on a VR, didn't have access to Souri's oil so I used Motul SAE 50 mono grade oil. The viscosity appears to be pretty close, I settled on 40g counter weight, then my normal 15g final weight. So far this seems to be working for me...... If people who are using something different feel like posting, then please do, resource threads can be extremely useful!

For just about any dashpot, traditionally glycerine is the fluid of choice. If you could get a silicone fluid that was of the proper viscosity that would work as well, but most silicone materials are too "thick" for dashpot use. Oil of any kind probably wouldn't be a good choice because of viscosity. Glycerine has about the perfect viscosity for use in lathe dashpots. For a VR system, I don't know what is recommended as the system might be so different than traditional lathes you might need something "thicker."

Prestos - vegetable glycerine. Works just fine. It's what is recommended in the manual...

Vinyl Recorder - RC shock silicone oil. RC tires on the cutterhead, so seems quite fitting! I believe it is 500cSt or around 60wt. Can't remember! I just asked for the middle of the range expecting to go higher or lower. Very close match to what was in the syringe I got from Souri. I tried all sorts when I ran out. Even 3-in-1 at a push which was ok on 7's but not good on 12's.

Happy cutting.

Thanks for the info. From what I know, 500cSt is around 40wt.

I use a Neumann VMS suspension box, they never specified what grade to use, but 3 in One oil works perfectly and it doesn't
weep all over the place!

Can you specify the brand and type? Thanks in advance.

Maybe it's not a known brand in the antipodes, but I think the reference is to this Aussie :-

The original oil specified was Telus 29. They then specified a silicone oil who’s specs I forget. Telus 29 is impossible to find although I have a good stash. I switched over to the silicone oil a couple of years ago and I find it better than Telus 29. You do have to clean the suspension as the silicone oil can creep out of the dash pot.
