Presto K8 Dashpot, damper

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Presto K8 Dashpot, damper

hello does anyone know of a dashpot that would work for the Presto K8. Or a alternative that could fit on it?
i saw a picture somewhere on the forum of the original damper that fits on the side of the cutting head.

The reason i need it is because i seem to be getting oscillations and i noticed the cutting head sort of bounces when cutting a record.

Also when i look at the grooves on the record there is some sort of pattern where it goes from dark to light.

Any suggestions will help me out

Are you sure it was a K8? I've seen lots of pics of the K8 but never one with a dashpot set up. Do you mean the 75a?

Hello, it couldve been for the 75a. The 75a looks to have the same cutting arm as the k8. the only difference i see is that there seems to be a screw behind the cutting head to where the damper connects to.

I just need to know how the damper that is mounted 75a works so i can probably fabricate one myself.

It's just a knurled knob that screws into the mount that the cutting head is on. The head mount on the 75a has a larger flat piece in front of the pivot than on the K8. The K8 doesn't really have much space to mount a dashpot in front of the pivot. I think that's why they eventually went with an advance ball on the K10. I started working on a 75a about a year ago and have made very little progress. Thread here: http://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=4090&hilit=75a&sid=e040e1507e73672a033a5bc19972dda7

I can take some pictures of the 75a mount this week if you are interested.

Thanks for the pictures and links to the other topic you started.
I am curious to what kind of material they used for the dashpot for the 75a.
