From my understanding it is not a pitch computer. It is more or less a remote control for the VMS. It is also a monitoring mixer and allows you to adjust the levels of your preview signals.

The MD70 effecitvelly makes the VMS 70 an 80 with land & depth of cut control as well as the ability to adjust levels with greater ease including more accuracy plus a whole lot of bells and whistles
Due to the fact that these two parameters can be set you get about 10% extra real estate on the record
Another function it has is that the meters are "corected" for any meter offset that happens as well as the ability to set a cutting level by playing a test or any record that one wants to match the cutting level to
In my view a very expensive option but a very good system add on all the same if you got the dough to throw at it or sell your 70 and get an 80 for a lot less That is if you can find one of course
Never seen a used one for sale either so whoever has them they seem to keep them
I often wonder how many are out there in evereday use, any clues???

Most cutting consoles had Preview Offset. This is more convenient and more repeatable than tweaking the programmer. The MDS-70 also has Preview Offset in sum/difference as well as L/R which is very handy.

The MDS-70 is a companion piece to the MTC-2 console. It doesn't make sense to operate it as a standalone unit.
