Amplifier for VR
Hi cutters, any recommendations for amplifiers for the VR? Mine just stopped working so need urgently to find a replacement, here’s what I’ve found but open for any recommendations you can have
- QSC GX3 (2 x 425W /4ohm) Class A/B
- Crown XLi 800 (2 x 300W /4ohm) Class A/B
Also found a good deal on Ecler eGPA2-300 but connections are Euroblock that I don’t like and this one is a Class D amp.
If you guys have any recommendations would be great, thanks!

I see the Avantone Pro CLA-200 is really popular .
but the avatone is underpowered and you want at least 350watt @ 4 ohms
you always want to be over powered vs underpowered.
class ab is a good choice.
Personally I choose a class D amp but a " HIFI " amp. I highly recommend hifi amps like a Bryston over a consumer level "live sound" amp like QSC. but that's just me.
2 tube mono blocks would be pretty kick ass...? really its boils down to personal choice and the music your cutting.

Avantone looks really great but it’s too expensive for me.
Opted for a repair, the one I was using is 300W @4ohms and can record up to +12dB (not that I cut that loud, max I’m cutting is +6dB for some electronic music)
Found a good deal on a Class D HiFi Ecler amp, looked really good but it’s Euroblock connectors that I dislike!
Will upgrade later for sure so all opinions and suggestions are welcome!

If you are running an open loop head then more or less anything big enough will do fine, there is significantly more HF energy in this application then would be expected in normal audio, so straight AB is likely to be better behaved then some class G/H stuff where the boosted rail might not quite manage to be fast enough.
It only gets complicated if running a closed loop head because then any phase shift thru the amp up to the point where the loop gain hits unity is going to hurt loop stability, and that might be very bad (Think ultrasonic oscillation doing a number on both the amp and the cutter head). For that you want something with a negligible phase shift out to at least 60kHz or so, which argues for something that DOESNT have the (usually good practise) ultrasonic filter at the front.
GX3 would probably be my pick of those.

I use QSC GX3, simple, powerful and reliable. Sound quality, in my opinion, is quite decent, about its price on the secondary market is about 200 dollars/euro. For the second cutter I will buy QSC GX5.
