Modern amp advice for Grampian D 8ohm head / Rondex lathe
Hi trolls,
In between a couple of lathe projects I picked up an old Australian produced Rondex (see the attached pic). I've got the motor running, and the rubbers away for rebuilding, but the amplifier's been parted out a long time ago.
My electronics skills aren't so great beyond fault finding and recapping, and I'd love to get this thing running, without clumsily building my own tube amp.
Soooooo, I need to find an amp I can use to drive this thing. 150w-ish, preferable not too pricey (at least while I get the hang of it). I figure I'll worry about the feedback circuit after I get the hang of this thing. I'll sort the RIAA reverse curve out separately so it doesn't need that function. And if there's something on ebay AU, even better.
If anyone's got any advice on the above I'd be most appreciative.
Thanks!

Hi OPP, there's a bit of info here...
http://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=5457&p=33255&hilit=lm3886#p33255
I've just bought a couple of these amps from Joe Malone in Queensland.
http://www.jlmaudio.com/shop/8pakamp-kit.html
They use the same chip that Flo used in the Kingston amps and can be bridged to give higher power.
There is a build thread and forum for all his kits and he's a very helpful guy.

Thanks for the information Sillitoe. Does anyone else have any recommendations on an amplifier I can buy off the shelf that will work nicely with the Grampian head? I'm keen to start experimenting with this thing!

Anyone got advice for a common/off the shelf amp that'll play nicely with a Grampian D??

I don't know much about the Grampain head, you could try an Alesis RA series. Not sure about the AU, but they are cheap in the states. You'll need a preamp and some kind of metering and head protection, of course.

thanks for the reply - what do you have in your chain between your amp and cutting head?

Hey there,
Is this the one Rick might have mentioned to me the other day?
Did you find an amplifier in the end?
Cheers,
Evan (Melb)
