blog on restoring Lyrec lathe
I figured I pass this link along as it definitely seems way cool to me.
Electric Mastering http://www.electricmastering.com/ in London, UK (home of engineer Guy Davie, formerly of The Exchange) is adding another room to their mastering studio - this one featuring a "vintage" all tube path and plenty of Danish cutting gear. Guy started a blog on the restoration of the Lyrec system (which just started) at
http://electricvalveroom.wordpress.com/
There's a really great shot of the Lyrec SV12 lathe at
http://electricvalveroom.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/p1010490.jpg
that you can zoom in on to get some detail - nice for me as I've only seen a few much smaller photos of these before.
Best regards,
Steve Berson

Having said that, a lot of hits were cut on that machine.
Big Al Corbeth cut the worlds supply of 'Tubular Bells' 25 or 30 sets of lacs.
Also 'Close to the Edge' by Yes about 20 times as well as numerous others.
Very long tape path on the deck with sliding preview/pb heads. Fancy!
Used to be fond of swarf burn ups as well !

New photo's at last!
Hi all,
At long last there's been some action in the valve grotto, so feel free to look at the new photo's on the blog. More to come soon too...

Re: blog on restoring Lyrec lathe
When I was buying and selling used cutting equipment in the 80s and 90s I sometimes handled Lyrec lathe systems. The first one was the mono one at IBC in the Joe Meek room. Some lads in South London bought it and Sean set it up for them, but what happened to it after that I have no idea! I remember it was great fun getting it down to street level in the lift
I had three complete Lyrecs through my hands, together with a Lyrec preview Tape player as well as a multitude of Ortofon units.
I cannot remember where the second one came from, but I am guessing CBS at Whitfield Street. That was one of the few that had an intact set of parts to automatically create the locked groove for autochangers.
I restored the whole thing for our own facility and did demonstrate the lock groove, just out of interest. Eventually it was bought and shipped to Japan.
The third one came from somewhere in Wales and I completely restored that one for a customer. He wanted it to look classy, so I had the top plate completely stripped to the brass and then clear lacquered.
The covers were all sprayed black and baked to give a lasting finish.
I wonder if the blog subject was where one of those three ended up?
I cover the Lyrec in my book described at http://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=6701

Re: blog on restoring Lyrec lathe
The Lyrec lathe at a Electric Mastering came from Romania apparently.

Same silly assertions but the photos are better. Nicely tinted gold so they make it all look splendid!
