suppliers for ruby cutting styli?
Hi All, Perfectly happy with Apollo/Transcos styli, great customer service, nice people etc. But I've been waiting on a stylus for almost three weeks, in that time I improbably blew my backup stylus so I'm dead in the water, have been for two weeks, angry customers, no way to reasonably give any cli...

Re: Mics!
I've done a lot of orchestra recordings with a lot of different RCAs. I loved ribbons for live recording because of the null that figure 8 provides, you can get a lot of isolation where you need it depending on where the player are. I would generally say stay away from 77's and look into 44s or 44 c...

I'm selling my lathe control unit, I've switched to a home made system. Also includes about a half a dozen spare...

Re: Digital vs Analog Masters
Ultimately, that question doesn't matter. You should be able to cut from either format and the wisdom of cutting digital to analog has nothing to do with anything. I'm a big fan of cutting from all analog mixes. When I was working as a recording engineer I made many recordings that were fully analog...

Re: Electrical considerations for lathe and accessories
I just wired up a new room so this is fresh in my mind. I ran one circuit for all audio, one circuit for "lathe mechanical", so motor (my motor is 110 single phase), pitch computer, heater, and control relays and one dedicated circuit for the vacuum pump, then a circuit for lights, a circuit for the...

Re: Ni-Chrome Heater Wire Length
The wire on the rubys I buy from Apollo have approx 2.5" of lead on each side, it seems pretty consistent looking at the stili I've got sitting around from the last year or so. I'm eyeballing all of this, but that's ballpark.

Re: stylus heat issue - power supply - VMS 70
You are right, it could certainly be a bad regulator. I would take a hard look at the large filter caps in whatever power supply provides power to the heater. I would also check any tantalum caps that might be in the psu.

Re: Lyric/Neumann users, have you had flutter problems?
Sorry for question, but are there ic on your boards ? This problem remember a little the same on a Revox A77 that I had in service . The direct drive capstan had a problem of wow and flutter, so the speed wasn't stable. Thanks for the input. There aren't boards involved at all. They lyrecs are big ...

Re: Lyric/Neumann users, have you had flutter problems?
I had 8 months of operation with no problems on the lyrec/neumann bearing setup, then suddenly this week, I'm getting a huge amount of wow. Audible at 1k playing from my test record and on the scope you can see the waveform compressing and expanding with the change in pitch in the test tone. I've be...

Re: why no mention of dead moon on here?
Love dead moon. Huge inspiration for me when I started cutting. They are always sort of in the back of my mind as an ideal for what the meshing of smart underground punk ideas and the more technical parts of getting a record made should look like. and I also always think it's weird they aren't sort ...

Re: Phono Transfer System Boards Available
I just got a set of these boards in the mail and they look really well done. Looking forward to building them.
I've also been using the KA Mid-Side board in my cutting rig and it is a great, really powerful really versatile circuit.

Re: Chip mess and suction issues
You can check for major burrs by running a piece of dental floss through the copper tube and kind of "flossing" around the inside surface to see if it catches. This will mostly only help if there is a pretty major burr.

Re: Synchronous AC motor for leadscrew
Gear reduction on either the feed motor or the platter motor is unacceptable due to noise transmission. Unless you like to hear little clunking noises in unmodulated grooves. Markrob's standards might not be the same as a Neumann user, fyi. I'm in agreement with most folks on here that there is a b...

Extra Poly Blanks for sale
I ended up with more polycarbonate blanks than I needed this month, so I'm selling off the overrun. They are CNC machined LEXAN with protective film, holes are RIAA spec, blanks are clear and square. I've cut a lot of records from the same stock, so they are known to work fine. I have three boxes of...

Re: Modern amp advice for Grampian D 8ohm head / Rondex lath
I don't know much about the Grampain head, you could try an Alesis RA series. Not sure about the AU, but they are cheap in the states. You'll need a preamp and some kind of metering and head protection, of course.

IMG_3261.JPG Hello all-- Last question, anybody know what happened to Robert Hughes, in Minneapolis, who was "audadvnc" here on the forum? He's not an active user on the forum anymore, and I am going to be in Minneapolis this weekend and would love to visit him and see his Scully 501 lathe in actio...
