Re: Best stylus shape for playback of acetates?

There was a paper by J.G.Woodward , M.D.Coutts , E.R.Levin of RCA Labs published by AES where they use a SEM (scanning electron microscope) to analyse records, needles etc. The paper dates 1968 One of the tests was to look at silent grooves (cut in a lacquer) played back with a sphreical / elliptica...

Re: RCA Victor cutter distortion problems

welcome to the secret society! nice lathe you have! well, a loose needle is not good - is there no stylus set screw on your head (little screw on the bottom of the front?) is the needle inserted in the right way? otherwise distortion/noise could also be caused by cutting with the wrong needle into t...

Re: understanding input impedance options of Gotham PFB-150W

the only minus on the 10k input is that your signal has to be 8db louder...
so my new recommendation is the 2.5k input if there is not enough headroom

Re: understanding input impedance options of Gotham PFB-150W

Hey, just had a quick look at the input circuit of the gotham amp, and it looks like you don't need to worry much about impedance matching on the gotham amp since the input transformer is already terminated with 2x 270 Ohm (approx. 600Ohm). All other connection options come from a resestive voltage ...

Re: AM32b Schematics

Right, this CD is defenetly worth the 20$ !!

but there's no information on the early am32 tube stuff, and also no information on the vg66 amp rack (at least on mine...)
so if anyone has those manuals/schemes it would be very nice to share.

Re: Don't plate

I call your description bunkum... i can live with that... No, the Nickel layer is deposited, but plating is not desired as that would preclude "parting." Forming is desired. This way, the Ni can be "parted" from the lacquer. My thought was that the silver layer is formed, and also able to get seper...

Re: Don't plate

well... let's say the silver-layer is the first step in making a negative (father) as most of us know this is usually done by spraying the lacquer with a mixture of ammonical silver (?) and glucose formaldehyde (?). -> neither electroplating nor electroforming! - i would call this (liquid) chemical ...

Re: cutterhead Audax Rh5 - appropriate amplifier

Hi! since it's 8 Ohm you can use any (modern) HiFi amp. Maybe add a fuse (500mA) in line with your cutterhead for protection. you also need an inverse-RIAA filter - you will find more info in this forum... vintage (78) recording characteristic would be bass roll off under 500 Hz, which could be made...

Re: Tank circuit to attenuate cutterhead resonance?

...flatten out the 4.5 kHz resonance peak in my Presto 1D ... attenuate it 24 dB or so... 24dB ??? - if the peak is really that heavy then you should check your heads internal damping system... anyway, what you are looking for is a "notch-filter". an easy way would be a series circuit of RLC. other...

Re: New Project

you sure will have fun playing around with this thing. about head/amp: 1 Ohm is quiet low, so it might need a rewind. modding an old magnetofon rec/play amp does not make sense and is a crime! please use something else... btw, do you think you could scan those manuals for me? would be very nice! i m...

Re: New Project

welcome to the universe of record cutting! you really made a nice find! to bad you didn't get the grampian and neumann heads...(any chance to find out where thay've gone?) about your lathe: i can't tell you exactly what brand/model this is, but as you already found it is a 1930-40s german recording ...

Re: Ortofon DS522 Styli Wanted

the stylus for the mono ortofons is 0.75mm diameter straight solid ruby (saphire...), so the hole in the armature is just a little bigger. also needed is the so called collet ring, which goes around the armature (conical) reducing its inner diameter so that the stylus is held in its place. original ...

I was considering having the SL1200 just be a "lathe" but not actually do the spinning at all. The platter extension im considering would have grooves cut into the side walls of it for a belt to drive it, driven by another motor of some kind... To me this sounds like using the Technics as turntable...

These are specifications read from the plate: Bodine Electronic Company AC motor, 115V, 1.0A, cont. duty, PH 1, H.P. 1/25, R.P.M. 1500-1800, cycle 50/60, type NYC-34. 1500-1800 rpm tells me it is an asyn...
