Re: WTB Lathe-Seeking Advice + Knowledge [+ crucial digressi

Wow. An MFSL engineer posted a response to my little question about half speed mastering. Pardon me if I swoon a moment, the few half speed masters that I have are all, almost without exception, leaps and bounds beyond the original releases of the same material. So, thanks. This small digression has...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

I owe you an email, sorry. Let's touch base. ... Here are some graphs: https://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=824 You'll notice that the "conservative" graph tends to shave a minute off my rule of thumb, especially as you move up in LPI. No worries. You don't need to get in a hurry for me....

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

Thanks for all the info guys. I looked over the wiki pages, and read through them all (and even managed to score a book from the goodwill that I have been reading.) I'm trolling the antique stores, flea markets, and thrift stores looking for some gear. (I actually passed up a great looking Rek-O-Kut...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

I can say with certainty that, given the right EQ curve, my Presto 1D cutting head will cut close to flat, at the start of the LP side, up to 14K or above. That's good to know. Thanks. Here's a good place to start: http://lathetrolls.pbworks.com/w/page/22959575/The%20Secret%20Society%20of%20Lathe%2...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

Mark, Both of those additions seem to be corroborated by what I am reading. I appreciate the input. I will look in to the cutting heads you mentioned. I've got an ortofon cartridge on my turntable right now, and it was a pricey piece of kit, but it's the best sound I've ever had out of a stereo. I i...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

Thanks for the help! It sounds like, with a cutting head, I'd need a way to remove the cut plastic from the disc. I remember reading something about vacuum systems, so I assume that this is where those come in to play. Is that right? [Man, there were a lot of pronouns in those sentences.] Are there ...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

So it sounds like a presto is definitely what I'm after. Could you give me a bit more information about the difference between "impressed" and "cut" records in process and quality? Can the prestos be used to cut, or jut to impress? Also, with regards to cutting heads, I would prefer a mono head with...

Re: WTB Lathe - Seeking Advice and Knowledge

Well that was about the most useful and informative post I could hope for. I'll put some more research in to the presto models. A fully working 6N sounds like it would be the ideal beast, but it's a bit more than I was hoping to spend to start out on. I think that I will make that the dream machine ...

WTB Lathe-Seeking Advice + Knowledge [+ crucial digressions]

I run a small record store. We are looking to buy a lathe to occasionally cut records in store. I am a novice in these regards. I've read a lot of posts here, and the consensus seems to be that I need to be prepared to spend a lot of money, tinker with the bits constantly, and accept that it's not g...
