Check out "antique at heart" etc in Handcrankers

kd88's thread "antique at heart, contemporary in approach" in the Handcrankers forum involves him duping his records using, I think, silicone. Very very exciting! I can't figure out how to move the thread up here (where I think this sort of thing best belongs), but please check it out!! Anyone who u...

Nice Wikipedia article: Unusual types of phonograph records

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unusual_types_of_gramophone_records I like the 1972 Bhutanese postage stamps that were records!! among other cool things: "In 1972, the Kingdom of Bhutan released several unusual postage stamps that were playable plastic phonograph records. These miniature 33 1/3 RPM rec...

I would like to get my head rewound.. I recommend hallucinogenic cactus, but only under the supervision of a mature, trained elder in the Native American tradition. Check out the "handcranker" forum below.

There's a cool discussion of whether it's possible to plate your own master stampers, blah blah blah. I'd move it here but it's nice to have something going on there.

Handcrank cutters? Do they exist?

May sound a little dumb ,but I thought there must be hand cutters too, A grammphone cutter. Anyone know any models? Not a dumb question at all, but perhaps a disappointing answer. To the best of my knowledge, cutters in the acoustic era were generally one-of-a-kind machines. It seems a little unlik...

96 Classical 78's (12") for sale in Brooklyn

96 Classical 78's for Sale -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- A guy I know in Fort Greene, Brooklyn is moving out of his house of 40 years in a few days. He wants to sell off his classical 78's. He's got 96 of them, all 12", a good half (at least) in the...

Private message feature? Use it? Limit it?

I'm thinking of limiting the private message feature here....Maybe that's one of the reasons spammers set up accounts here. It's really mysterious. Right now I have a 100 message cap on it. I'm thinking of bringing it down to 20 incoming, 20 outgoing, 20 saved. What thinks you? Anyone have a need fo...

Anti-spammer attempt

I'm going to try out a system for a few days...I will have to personally activate new accounts. I've been getting about 8 new members a day, and most of them are creepy spammers with ads or porn in their URLs. I don't have the time to delete them all. Maybe they are benign, but I don't really get it...

Unreadable archives in the years to come (LA Times)

I think this is of interest.....Our interest in mechanical reproduction dovetails with the concerns about digital archiving found here. Thanks to my friend Stephen Klein for forwarding this to me. --Steve Unable to Repeat the Past Storing information is easier than ever, but it's also never been so ...

Re: "direct metal mastering"

Ha! It's all been done before :) So in the interest of history, AFAIK the Songcatcher movie with the cylinders was fiction. Lomax started in America with big klunky Presto lathes run off 6V(!) mechanical inverters from his car batteries. Lomax was not the first field recording guy. Certainly there ...
