Re: Stylus (shank) dimensions
I could tell you exactly if my digital measuring device didn't have a dead battery. I have both a 362 and 462, brand new from Apollo/Transco sitting in the studio right now. I'll pick up a battery for my measurer tomorrow and if no one beats me to it, I'll measure and post. I have a variety of machi...

Re: TRANSCO/APOLLO Stopped producing DUB PLATES
Well... On my shipment one month ago I paid $10.92 each for 10" dubs. Plus shipping. Although I see 7" on their price list, it seems to me she had mentioned that they didn't have any 7" available. I don't recall if they weren't available at all any more, or if they just didn't have any at the moment...

Shorten Long Stylii OK?
Probably a silly question, but I've never done it before. Over the past month or so I've brought two machines back to life, a Recordio (NOT a Recordette) and a Rek-O-Kut. And I'm close to getting the Presto J-5 going. Far as I know these all take the short cutting stylus. I have a bunch of vintage b...

Re: Diamond stylus on tonearm cutting lathe possible?
Of course. I would venture to say that literally millions of lacquer records have been cut on these machines over the past 50 years or so. They were really meant to cut records, not emboss them, although embossing was certainly a viable option. There is a wide variety of cutting styli appropriate fo...

Re: TRANSCO/APOLLO Stopped producing DUB PLATES
Yes. The 10" dubs are available on an "as available" basis. I had exchanged a few emails with them about products, prices, etc and they emailed me a pdf price list. Then I sent an email indicating what I could like to buy, asked for price and availability and a quote. She sent me a quote, I sent $$ ...

Re: Presto J-5 Motor Mounts?
Thought I'd add a follow up. I was able to recreate the motor mounts using fuel line. I had done this years ago for some other record player. I did indeed determine the original were indeed rubber, they were THAT hard that I couldn't determine what they were. Squishing them with a pliers I was able ...

Re: TRANSCO/APOLLO Stopped producing DUB PLATES
Yes, they're still making lacquer discs every day. They have never specifically produced "dub plates". The dubs they sell are their regular master lacquers that did not pass quality inspection. They still have perfect recording area, but may have a cosmetic blemish or other defect (not in the record...

Presto J-5 Motor Mounts?
I'm just getting into the "restoration" of a Presto J-5. It's a decent and complete machine but it's been sitting for years and years. As I work my way through the mechanicals, I've noticed quite a bit of motor noise being transferred to the motorboard. Figured the motor mounts must be hard, so I re...

Re: TRANSCO/APOLLO Stopped producing DUB PLATES
I had no trouble ordering two boxes (total of 50) 10" dub plates last week from Apollo. HOWEVER they were NOT two hole discs, just a center hole. But they were dub plates at the reduced price. I've decided to take it upon myself to add that second hole. I'm not using these for electroplating for mas...

WANTED: Portable Presto or similar
After 40 years of restoring, tinkering with, and recording with various Recordios and GI tables, I've decided it's time to move up. I'm seeking a portable Presto or other similar machine, in complete and working order. Not looking to score one on the cheap, I'm willing to pay a fair price. What do y...

Re: Scully Acoustic Wax Lathe on "American Epic" TV Show
Deke -- Not only did I see it, but I immediately purchased the DVD set AND the set of CD's with 100 songs recorded back in the day on those machines that have been painstakingly restored from original shellac 78's. The sound is amazing. But there were things that bugged me about the show, and I fina...
