Still waiting to get back in the lab. I have a new experiment set-up for modulating the laser power at audio frequencies and I can't get in to have a play.
Here's my first paper on laser cutting records: https://www.aes.org/e-lib/browse.cfm?elib=20733

Re: Laser Cut Record
Hi, I had a project student try using the source code for an entire summer. They didn't have much success, I don't know whether this was down to the student or the source code. From reading the work by Amanda Ghassaei on instructables on 3D printing and laser cutting and comparing it to the HD vinyl...

Re: Laser cutting masters
It's a beast!
With the 355nm harmonic head I can get around 60W UV. which is pretty sweet for high speed polymer processing.

Re: Laser cutting masters
dmills. I was reading about ultrasonic focussing today. It seems really interesting. i read this today if you google scholar search it: Vibration assisted femtosecond laser machining on metal. The taper angle looks really good. At the moment I'm using an old Navigator ND:YAG with a 532nm head on it....

Re: Piezo ceramics as cutting head drivers?
I was looking at using piezo's in my research too. I was worried about stacking piezo's and not having them aligned correctly, so that there could be some form of rotational errors too. However, from what the expert above says, that may not be a problem. I have one of the Thorlabs units on the side....

Re: Laser cutting masters
Oh and good news my JAES paper has been fully accepted. Finally. I didn't realise it would take so long. They now need some suitable author photos and some quick bios. Tomorrow I will carry on with my literature review for my second paper. Hopefully the turn around will be much quicker this time. I ...

Re: Laser cutting masters
DMills Q switching a laser is a messy business. It works fairly well if you require a set frequency. However, if you start changing the frequency then the pulse energy changes. Making it challenging to regulate power accurately. Another option most modern lasers use is PWM control. This equally upse...

Re: Laser cutting masters
Hi Scott, You are correct, a Gaussian beam does indeed produce a "U" shaped beam rather than a "V" because of the power intensity distribution. My research this summer is to fix this problem. I have some solid ideas and if I have the time will be working on it. Yes the process is analog and is in re...

Re: Laser cutting masters
Wasn't Souri doing something with a laser cutter a few years ago...? Souri was indeed doing so. I think groove geometry was a stumbling block. Well it was for me. After lots of pondering and then being introduced to new laser technology I've solved that too. I'm in the process of planning a paper o...

Re: Laser cutting masters
Hi, To clarify. This is a priority filed patent. This means it has been filed. However, it is in lockdown for a year, thereby giving me protection on my intellectual property until we have a buyer. As for audio, or soundwave produced. I have produced a stereo recording. I can play it on a standard t...

Re: Laser cutting masters
"do the wavelengths your working with match the same sort of scale that a cutting stylus moves within?"
Wavelength plays a part on the minimum spot size of the laser. So it doesn't have much relevance to minimum feature size.

Re: Laser cutting masters
Isn’t that exactly what “hd vinyl” does? HD vinyl digitises the waveform and produce a topology of the groove. According to their latest patent they will use multiple passes to remove the material, leaving the ridges behind. I don't know how repeatable it is having overlapping passes. However, I hav...

Laser cutting masters
Hi all, I am a part time PhD student at Manchester University. I have just had my first paper accepted by the Journal of the Audio Engineering Society on how to produce a stereo record using a laser. This process has been protected in the form of a priority filed patent by the University of Manchest...

Re: Hi trolls, reading list request
Cheers for that tragwag, They look pretty good, I'm going to try and put in a library request and try to blag those two at uni! Just ordered the second and third book off of Soulbear's list too, for £0.01 each off of amazon, although Amazon are tax avoiders. Going to sell an old synthesizer I have l...

Re: Hi trolls, reading list request
Thanks Soulbear,
Larry Boden was already on the list. All the rest will be added!
At work I have access to loads of journals, I think the IEE journals and papers will be the most useful as I cannot access IAA articles. I might have to on the hunt and see if an academic somewhere has access.

Hi trolls, reading list request
Hi all, I have been pondering lathes for quite a while and am now in the amazing position where I am going to be allowed to research disc lathes at work as part of an MPhil, possibly leading in to a PhD. So what exactly is going to set my research apart from what has been done before? Well I work fo...
