Here's some general info I found: http://www.aes.org/tmpFiles/aessc/20110422/aes14-1992-r2009-i.pdf This whole topic get's grey & fuzzy though when people mix older pin3 hot with newer/other pin 2 hot gear during recording/mixing/mastering. Not sure about initial stylus excursion direction. Have to ...

Concrete, Tough not being able to hear or check it on our own systems but I suspect it's that stuff in the 21k and up range as displayed on the sound forge graph. It's not just that it's 22k, it's 22k that has more level than the rest of the frequency spectrum. Wipe that out and check what the AL is...

I have seen intrusions worse than that playback on narrower grooves. :)

I think also, that that piece of gear might be part of "The Vinyl Sound" that everybody seems to talk about. I love my records and would never get rid of them, but really isn't what people enjoy about vinyl also tied closely to its limitations (especially the high end)? When people say it is "warm"...

Hi Clint, Yes, turning back to your original question. Using an outboard de-esser or de-esser pluggin gives you more precise/musical control over sibilance. The Acceleration limiter on the SAL/VG rack is mainly (now days) to protect the cutterhead, especially the SX68's and older. Knowing the tolera...

To my knowledge it acts as a high shelf with the knee starting at around 5-6k. When it has to dig in hard your hearing gain reduction in frequencies even lower than 5-6k which really dull things down. Kind of like riding a treble knob on a hi-fi stereo I guess. Anybody have accurate numbers for the ...

If the dash pot is not working the sudden rush of current to the head suspension unit would drive the head down on the lead in groove quite harder than it would other ways do Respectfully, This would also show a deepening of the groove. I'm all out as well. still think its chip pick up though... :>...

Hi Dietrich, Could be "Orange Peel" Do you have the test pressing in question? If so, does that A side have an unclear rippled look to it? ..... as opposed to a smooth glassy look. Like the surface of an Orange? This would be most visible in the land of the lead out grooves. It can be heard as you d...

That's a great point Mossboss, this could and has happened before I'm sure. But I don't believe it's possible in this specific case. I think In order for untrimmed or slack heating wires to create this momentary mark on the disc, there would need to be an audio event with enough out of phase compone...

Hi Concrete, Yes, that looks like a momentary chip drop. If you notice the angle of the mark matches the angle the chip travels from stylus to suction tube. A few things that can cause this: 1. Suction strength weak. (Chip jar getting full, or suction tube gets blocked intermittently) 2. new/wet/sof...

Could be a few things, Given the fact that the lacquer is softer than the vinyl test pressing, the lacquer ref could sound different and/or have worn differently. (even after a few plays) I'm assuming the lacquer master that went to the plant was cut during the same session/setup/stylus as the lacqu...

The RIAA is the reference diameters to use. You can also put up a 7" pressing on your lathe and scroll the cutter into where the lead in and audio start portion of the disc is. Then mark it somehow (tape/pencil) on your lathe and use it as a reference point for where to drop head and start music. Co...

Thanks Again Opcode,

Those things you're working on sound interesting.
There's a few other people working on the software replacement for the pitch computer. Keep us posted on your progress with that.

Thanks Opcode & Concrete, Opcode, yea I know it's super scary to entrust a novice to pack & ship it. We currently have a VMS-70 that we bought from Masterdisk in 1993. It was packed up by their knowledgeable staff and custom crated with their supervision. It's been a while since then , hence the pos...
