Thanks for chiming in guys. Thanks Peter. I appreciate the effort. If you remove one of these modules, you'll see all of the variable resistor trims pots there...all 13 of them! If I had neumann extender cards and some info on the trim pots description, I believe I could do it... and hopefully learn...

BSB 74 Calibration

Hello, Does anybody have documentation or working knowledge of how to calibrate the left and right BSB -74 modules? I'm assuming you need to power and calibrate them while removed from the chassis...? I need to get my L&R thresholds equal. The BSB left channel shows about 10db of gain reduction befo...

Hi Jason, Sure thing, probably best to use my email. The LCD itself has all the functions built into it so it's pretty straight ahead. jj [at] goldenmastering [dot] com Mossy, As you stated: "My own experience has just about covered from a single cut to over 80 cuts and was still fine so about 30 - ...

Thanks, Yea I hate square cuts in those things too. Good thing this was all round holes. That LCD is a flush mount with a hollow cylinder threaded shaft. Pretty cool/compact little device. It's not intended as an indicator for when the stylus needs changed. Have you damaged a stylus from having the ...

Thanks, Yea I was happy about that. The programmer lid was rough with a circular rust mark from somebody setting acetone down in the same place for years...I actually did some autobody work on it and repainted the whole cabinet before install in the studio.

Stylus Hour Counter

I'm sure some of you have already done this but maybe some of you will find this useful or just a fun project to make. I put together a stylus hours counter out of a project box using this LCD trip counter from Jameco. (see link below) It allows trip/total and trip reset. So you can see/log total ho...

Mossy, I agree, the Effort is there and the process of making records haven't changed much. I guess I was speaking from a broader perspective of the available resources of the industry back then. I'd like to know who is dehorning/retouching mothers & masters in the US. Maybe there are some, but I've...

Nice Post! Incredible to realize the solid infrastructure the vinyl world had back then. They had guys and gals in so many areas of the process. i.e. the lady manually "Correcting imperfections" in the metal mother.... and the guys at the end crash testing the different vinyl compounds and checking ...

Ok cool, thanks for that.
I assumed you were heating a lacquer and cutting with standard adamant/transco styli.

@ Opcode:

What are the results/benefits your getting on the vms70/sx74 from heating the lacquer prior to cut?
Consistent chip pickup?
better looking cut?
less noise?

Just curious.

Thanks,

yes, The pitch computer sees the audio first, then the delayed signal is cut. Think of the preview (or non-delayed signal) as a look ahead so that the pitch computer can know what's coming and either tighten or widen the space between the grooves so they don't over cut each other or waste space.

If i was working from an analogue chain would i place an external rack delay for it. Yes, you could and many people do. Although dedicated digital delay's with the needed delay times that operate at 88.2/96k are not easy to come by. In which case you may be better off using a high quality A/D feedi...

Yes. If you are in the box source processing from a daw you could place this after all level & eq etc. Same would apply if you are using your Daw as a delay only. Ultimately what you'll need a delay for is to split your stereo signal into two paths to your lathe. (VMS-?/pitch computer??) One without...

So when cutting a Un-modulated groove, do you see any erratic movement on the depth meter? Check the audio connections and cabling at the preview Mod left in for loose/cold solder joints/shorts. Is the spring/depth adjustment screw in the suspension box working correctly and free from any binding or...

Here's an article which describes the state of Helium availability in the US right now. Our local store "Airgas" stopped selling it here in Ventura Ca. also.

100% analog is no big deal, it's like saying a board was nailed with a 100% hammer. Of course the advance feed audio doesn't have to be analog. Just start a digital playback a couple seconds before your analog tape machine and you're good to go. In my studio I keep a hawt 21 year old intern around,...

Yea, it's always been optional, much in the way that using the acceleration limiter is optional, but it's there if you need it. I usually keep in mind that
heat is not a friend to the cutter head, and base helium decisions around that. Better safe than out of business though.
