I believe the Transco # 362 would be equivalent to the short shank common to most home recorders of the day. Can someone confirm this? I'm going to need one for an RCA soon. I assume any new cutting stylus would be cutting a microgroove. I know what happens when I assume... The Presto 1D uses a long...

I think there is a tool company called Record. When I do a search for "Record Cutter" I often find a tool that looks like a wrench or bolt cutter of some sort.

The article in the following link refers to a solution that was to be applied to a disc after it was cut in order to lubricate and harden the record. I've never heard of this before. Does anyone know what it was and how effective it was?

Thanks Curley Ann! I was watching that wondering what the records may have been - Beatles recording are not hard to come by, but I saw some MGM 50'ish looking ones that might have been fun. My cousin had a full box of 10 inch LPS from the early LP era - and he used them as beebee gun targets.

Thanks! I've used a 6n and never gave that a thought. The drive pin was there, so I used it. Good to know.

Why is it not necessary on the 6N. How will you keep the disc from slipping?

Be aware that aside from any tube, amp, and drive wheel issues, the crystal cutter probably needs to be restored. They die from age and unless it's been already rebuilt, you can pretty much count on it not working.

Ok, maybe the objective was not to make a bad lathe, but it still baffles me when something is designed to do one thing and one thing only and does it poorly. If it really sounds like a train station P.A. it should be in the price point of a child's toy. I guess I should just say "What were they thi...

That's a shame. Why go to the trouble designing and manufacturing something that is intentinally bad? How much more cost would it have been to make it acceptable quality. Thanks for the education.

Curley-Ann, I agree. One bad scratch on a new CD can turn it into a coaster or paper weight. As long as I have needle and a way to make a record spin, I can hear Fanny Brice, Al Jolson, or Caruso after a trip to a flea market or record convention. Many people think digital is archival. I guess it co...

Hi - Better late than never. Wanted to give an update so maybe it will help someone in the future. I had the drive wheel re-built by Terry's Rubber Rollers, added rubber grommets to the motor suspension, adjusted the pressure of the roller against the platter - and the problem seems to be gone. I di...

Yes, I have one that was restored by Gib at West Tech. It does what it's intended to do very well, which is to record LO-FI records from the AM radio, microphone or other external source. The mechanics are the same as was used in the Wilcox Gay Recordio and most other home recorders of the day. The ...
