Re: Test tone for cutter head calibration
Hi Jay, Good effort with the test tones, thank you for sharing! I've been thinking about doing something similar. I plan on using this cut to balance my cutter head, by cutting it, playing it back, and recording it to my computer. Then I can see how even each tone is reproduced, and eq to compensate...

perfectly flat response microphone made either by Neumann or Shure are you "shure" about that? Seems odd that they would buy capsules from other companies when they manufacture (or well, USED TO manufacture) excellent ones themselves. Maybe a price issue? On the other hand I would expect that their...

BOOK: "Neumann The Microphone company"
http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51FRIuUoHWL._SL500_AA300_.jpg ISBN 3-932275-68-3 I just read this fantastic book, and as a quick search suggests it hasn't been covered yet on the forum, so I decided to make a post. The book tells the story of Georg Neumann and his company on 284 colored pages...

so you make the lathe out of hollow aluminum, and fill the cavities with expanding foam. saves a little on metal, keeps the weight down, and provides rock solid dampening from vibrations.. Just a thought as far as I can tell, the base of the Neumann AM31 I've used is hollow and made out of aluminiu...

When I worked in Lithuania Film Studio I saw with my own eyes - precision tables and equipment were thrown from the 3rd flood directly on the concrete. Just before that truck of equipment like studio reel recorders (including Nagra's), cinema projectors and more stuff were thrown to metal trash pla...

*knocking on wood* sorry to hear it's out of print. I got mine one year ago, so it hasn't been sold out for very long. If you can afford it, you could buy a one year AES e-library subscription, that way you can download all the papers that are in both disk recording volumes and then some - after the...

I think a Tefifon would be a good addition to your "weirdo stuff collection", because it's an exceptional piece of engineering. The recording medium is a tape loop, in endless Moebius strip configuration. There are several units on german ebay, they seem to fit your budget too.

ebay (germany): "Grawor" Decelith cutting lathe
Interesting machine, but a little pricey in my opinion:

Re: VMS 70/80
Interesting, thankyou :D I've been wondering about these things! So the dashpot and spring arrangement allows for any warp to the disc? It can compensate a little bit of it. I posted some pics of the dashpot/spring assembly in my AM31 thread over here: https://lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?t=1805&h...
