anybody care to weigh in on whether a conical stylus would roll over these transients any smoother, maybe worse?
At the outside diameter the answer is more likely no to making it smoother. At the inner diameter the answer is more likely yes.

Re: Finger Snaps on Test Pressing Questions

It's hard to say without looking at it. The problem that you are hearing could be a symptom rather than the cause. For instance a lot of low end or a snappy bass drum could be the real culprit. In a case like that you could slice and dice the snaps as much as you want and it won't fix the problem.

There is Organic Music in Obing Germany. He has custom made Telefunken M15A preview machines. I am not jealous of much but I am of those. I think he specializes in acoustic music though.

Custom Elliptical Equalizer

For offer is a custom built four channel Elliptical Equalizer, built by me. PCB's done by Roger Foote. It's the Neumann EE77 circuit with balanced line receivers and line drivers to interface with balanced +4dBu operating level equipment. I have been using these for the past two years. A few members...

Re: Electrical considerations for lathe and accessories

A VMS70/SAL74 won't draw more than 750W during start up. Most of the time it draws about a 10th of that.

Neumann lathes came either 117VAC or 220VAC. The turntable motors were either 50Hz or 60Hz.

Other than that there isn't much else electrically.

Not true. Especially aluminum electrolytics. You need to check ESR, capacitance value and leakage current to determine the condition of the capacitor. They can absolutely pass signal in poor condition.

Re: reel to reel

MTR-10's or 12's usually don't go for a lot of money and parts are available. They are great work horses but are clean without much of a sound. The lower grade MX5050 are also good but they are very popular and probably go fr more than an MTR10. I'd go for a Revox or Studer B67. Prices seem to be al...

It could also be an electronic problem with the associated AS card.

Re: VMS 70 -- Transmission/Clutch?

I've always head it a called a "differential". I think it's more likely that the belt is slipping. There are gears in there. I've never heard of there being a problem with one of those. You can tension the pitch drive belt by moving the roller on the arm. Clean the roller with acetone to remove rubb...

Re: Manley/Scully Lathe on ebay

In the original ad that I saw a few years ago they also had a shot or two of the drive package. IIRC it was a pair of mono blocks with a custom unit that I assumed was the feedback amp and a summing circuit to drive the cutter.

If you are in the NY area Chris Muth has all the right stuff. Please don't ask him for any information unless you are hiring him.

If you have the right bearing pullers and have experience with bearings it shouldn't be too difficult. Did you check the run cap? I think I have a exploded view diagram somwhere.

Re: Neumann AM32b on eBay

The VG66 doesn't get a lot of love. I've used one for over 15 years now. I've had plenty of opportunities to change to an SAL74(B). I like the VG66. When restored and set up properly they sound great. Don't let the specs fool you. I use an SX74 but would be happy with an SX68. I used the tube pitch ...

The system was recently restored. It hasn't really been put into service since the restoration. You can be sure the work was done properly.
