I think a better approach would be to have the box respond to MIDI notes. Sort of the opposite of what you are proposing. Set up the loop the way you want in the DAW and have the MIDI notes trigger the box. One note for head drop and another for head lift. Just move the notes for needed offsets.

That sounds way more complicated than my method. We don't need an absolute value. Only a ratio in dB.

afaik there is only a loss in the highs. to check that frequency range properly you should use light beam measurements... maybe i find something... Can I see your calibrated light beam measurement system? I don't have one. I'd have to measure the frequency response of a cartridge by using a test re...

Lets hope it doesn't make its way to the Far East as a turntable. The price is supposed to be contingent on that. We could flip it for a bundle too.

Still not sure about that ominous 8 dB loss, though.... I'd like to know how this was determined and get some specifics wrt frequency response. 8dB loss is pretty vague. To test with a phono cartridge you would first have to characterize the frequency response of the cartridge and overlay that on t...

I can't speak to the LS76 but for the Neumann VMS66/70 this would not fully compensate for tweaking out the calibration with a different maximum base pitch. There are more and finer controls in the PS66 programmer.

It's hard to mention the word audiophile without stirring up trouble. Like Clint I need my system to run the same way everyday. That doesn't happen through laziness. Unlike many audiophiles I've met I put a great emphasis on ergonomics and reliability. I think a circuit that sounds glorious under la...

Exactly, I was thinking the same thing. What's Hi-Fi. What's audiophile? I meant it more as a marketing strategy. Something like "Serif Sound uses the Ortofon cutting system which is the best sounding cutting system ever produced." Use the uniqueness of the system to your advantage. I think audioph...

You are floating around saying first that 600 LPI Base Pitch can't be done and then, if it can, it's rare... (Of course I'm talking about a rare occasion! That's why I am talking about the additional attenuators.. Not only is there possibly musical program which is quite quiet and long playing, the...

No need to feel sorry for me. I know how to change it if I want to. I don't. I've done okay with it set up this way. When you get your pitch and depth system going, do some experiments and report back. The Zuma manual wants you to set the maximum pitch at 600LPI to calibrate it. I ignore this and se...

I'm sorry your lathe is limited in LPI. (; 450LPI is how I have it set up, not the capability of the machine. I think it will do 1,000LPI although I've never checked. Again, since this may not be getting through to some in the thread, using the number 600 as a Base Pitch is not at all the same as u...

Hi Andrew,

I think you will quickly change your theories once you start cutting. The max pitch on my lathe is 450LPI. That's a base depth of 2 mil with a half mil of land. At 600LPI with a half mil of land you would be cutting a 1.5 mil groove. And you will be getting complaints from everyone.

There are different ways to skin the cat. The SV66 can only offset about 6dB at 40hz so no setting will work for everything. If base pitch is set too tight you will get overcuts. Setting a base pitch of 600LPI is a recipe for disaster un;ess you do a lot of spoken word. The controls on a VMS66/70 ar...

I just received an email from Dietrich with specifics for both heavy and light oil made by Mobil. McMaster-Carr doesn't carry a Mobil oil that is a direct replacement. I have bought a few to see. I've been looking at "way" oil and "spindle" oil. Tellus 29 is listed as a hydraulic oil and seems to b...

Everything has disappeared. I have talked to quite a few people who should know what happened to it. And they don't. The last time it was seen it was busted up. It hasn't been seen since.

Thanks Paul! The calibration for that is the "sp" pot on the controller box, correct? Correct. Do you know what the function of the setting called "sec" is on that knob? Just another position. It looks faster than 0.25 I found out my #2 lathe will go into that mode but you have to turn the knob cou...

i was only visitng frankford/wayne after he left and at this time i think 2 x VMS66( with strange pitch systems) and one scully not in operational state. At closing there were two VMS70's with Compudisk automation. The VMS66 was there but owned by someone else. I guess you were there to install the...

There are even small and subtle differences in the two VMS70s that I have. They are all a little different but almost every sub assembly can be exchanged. The knob that controls spiral time has a function when you set it to "sec" that puts a VERY short spiral and the second lathe you cannot even pu...

The VMS66 and the VMS70 are functionally identical. It was just a cosmetic change. You can exchange every part. Just about the only difference is that in the 70 the location of the power transformers were moved.

I prefer the look and build of the VMS66. The frame is a little sturdier.
