Re: Combination DMM, LP-45 and CD-4 QuadraDisc.

We are working on a software based CD-4 demodulator project. Two things: http://www.plangentprocesses.com 1. You should see if http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jamie_Howarth has time to give you his input - because he's using +/- the same frequency to recover from speed errors from when analog* tape wa...

Re: Half Speed Mastering Demo

I have no interest in making styli that are specific to only 6 cutterheads. We were hoping to cop the designs thereof - improve where necessary and make a complete production run. I have interest in making a Neumann DMM tip mostly because I feel my shop does work that rivals anything from any part ...

from the other thread: https://www.lathetrolls.com/viewtopic.php?f=15&t=4096 ...Or - being opcode66 already making his own Neumann replacement styli in Chicago - maybe HE can research the ortofon tips for the DMM heads they had six experimental versions of back in the 80's and see if THAT'S even wor...

Most of the research-to-date can be found here:

Other related research is scattered in other threads.

Re: Edison Flexi-Dictaphone playback

One thing that is confusing is these two machines are both vpd3's yet look a bit different. Are there any mumbers or letters in the suffix after the model number? or a notation of the year in which they were made? You could have - say - a `53 model VPD-3 and a `55 model VPD-3 for example. So I need...

...XP... Bloody well better not be. Antiquated operating system. Support is ending in March. Fancy coming into the New Millenium do you? This record has been produced in Glorious Quadraphonic Sound. Can also be played on stereo or mono-equipment with a lightweight tonearm at a pinch. However this r...

 WOW, So much info :) and GREAT!!! I am a poor young man with no high tech equipment etc. or tech. knowledge, Yet I think I understand what you are saying Correct me if I am wrong please. You are saying that these machines when running, slow down a bit as they emboss, leading to the center, ...

Re: Edison Flexi-Dictaphone playback

Ran out of editing time. Grrr. All the other boards I belong to - posts can be edited and/or deleted indefinitely. I've updated old posts YEARS later with new information and it takes just fine. Anyway - back to transferring dictation-disc formats. The worst offenders are the CLV (constant-linear-ve...

Think it sold for $9.99 :( Where - or who - would I send such a machine to - as to be restored? I searched "Edison Voicewriter" for days looking for any info and never...

Re: Edison Flexi-Dictaphone playback

including the patents for stereo vertical-and-lateral acoustic grammophone recordings from the 1910's... They made a couple hundred of those. Re: 7'' plastic inner adapter name

I got corrected by a couple guys that said only the kind that you squeeze the edges to pop into the disc are called spiders because of the legs. The aluminum versions - both the press-ins and the weave-ins like a Webcor that warp the 45 into which you are sliding it are called `plates'. And - in the...

Re: Half Speed Mastering Demo

Well, being we're continuing our so-far-seven-year research into half and 3/4 speed mastering - resurrecting CD-4 quadraphonic and 33-for-45 playback for DMM and any number of other odd and strange procedures that no `serious' mastering house will ever touch, we found out: 1. Ortofon made six test c...

Clear, Blank CD's

So I got a temporary job at an E-Waste recycling plant to get a lil holiday money. My job entails sorting CD's DVDs LaserDiscs and other media to separate out anything that's not a factory pressing containing either aluminum (one pile) or gold (another pile) All the home-burnt discs and CD/DVD RW's ...

Re: Edison Flexi-Dictaphone playback

So how many Edison Voicewriter discs do you have exactly? Is it enough to warrant buying a player off eBay - working or not - and sending it in to one of the dictation-archive specialty houses in order to get restored and have a new stylus made? I'm sure if you did that - you'd get close to if not m...

Re: Extracting Audio from Pictures

The way they SHOULD have done it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw9jfX4Ykxw Which they finally did several years after the original experiments. They spent all this time to cut it all apart and make lines out of each revolution and then ran millions of calculations to discern the linear speed of ea...

Edison Flexi-Dictaphone playback

It seems our site owner ran across a bunch of old Edison flexidiscs from their early-50's take on dictation disc formats and discovered that playback at 33 was too fast and playback at 16 was too slow. So in case anybody else is into these formats, I offer the following short primer of early-50's fl...
