Making a 12" lacquer
Hi guys, just had a crazy idea. Because the audio engineers only use the first two inches of a 14" lacquer disk as a test cut, why couldn't you just make the test cut on a separate record instead, then only make a 12" stamper?
Let me know if this will work or not.

Re: Making a 12" lacquer
What is the mold going to grab onto if it's pressing a 12" record from a 12" stamper?
There is nothing for the stamper to be clamped in.
Best

Okay, that makes sense now.
Re: Making a 12" lacquer
+ you need some working area when separating the metal from the lacquer after plating/forming:

Re: Making a 12" lacquer
The stamper is clamped around the outside edge of the mould so it needs to be larger in diameter than the finished record.
CBS used 7" stampers and 12" stampers for 7" and 12" records respectively. This was due to the method they used for separating the record from the mould. Their stampers were not clamped but glued to the face of the mould. In any case, they cut on 10" lacquers for 7" pressings and 14" lacquers for 12" pressings.
