What the heck!! Swarf playback?! What a wild idea– certainly gets my imagination going --Part of me can't discern whether or not you are serious!Sillitoe wrote:I've designed the system to run in manual mode, switchable to fully digital control which means that future software updates (and completely new software control environments) can be emailed to users without the need for any hardware retrofitting.
At the moment the digital control from Ableton running M4L is very nice.
A completely standalone system is a dream and may indeed become a reality in the near future but has added costs and complexities including convertors etc...
I've been thinking of a high end system for swarf playback! Imagine that!!!
I need to choose my rabbit holes carefully.
For what it's worth - When you mention a fully standalone system, the first simple solution that comes to mind is PDPi https://puredata.info/docs/raspberry-pi. I know a handful of people that really go to town with this platform reporting excellent stability and performance. This system would allow you to work out a slick GUI and all the fixings. PureData isn't necessarily elegant to work in, I must say.
Lately I have been neck deep in an AWESOME DIY audio platform that may be of interest to you and others reading this. Its called the Axoloti Core http://www.axoloti.com/. It comes fully equipped with tonnes of GPIO [including serial ports], high quality ADC & DAC, and SD card, USB IO, MIDI, ports on board. I'm starting to use it for everything and it's really making my life easier. The price is right This board could make an awesome lathe control platform!
Happy trails!

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
Little update...
The standard version of the lathe control console contains a 192kHz digital signal processor enabling flat cutterhead response from plug and play analog stereo source or USB input.
(Still no feedback but the sound is very nice).
The console also includes amps, metering, balanced external outs, stepped manual pitch control with additional rotary switch for lead in, track spacing and lead out (with user adjustable settings for each of these).
Second USB in for digital automated pitch and head drop.
Manual head drop from slider on the console (user can also easily adjust the pivot bar setup in the suspension box for traditional head drop lift).
USB out for connecting midi controller for easy user interface of digital controls (or other usb device).
Basic depth setting control, stylus heat... Lots more coming!
This lathe is designed to work with Technics SP10 turntables, either the MK2 or MK3 versions (MK1 models don't have enough torque and are therefore unsuitable).
I'm waiting to hear back from Technics in regard to the torque spec of their new 1200G turntable.
It is promoted as a new reference in direct drive turntables (which should mean it outspecs the MK3)...
14" discs are able to be cut.
I'm trying to keep the system price below $20K AUD... We shall see about the turntables and pricing soon.
Website with specs, sound and videos coming asap.
I'll post here when I can tell you more, thanks to everyone who has contacted me so far.
Cheers

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
Thanks Yano!
We shall see about price, maybe also a very basic model in the future.

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
Will keep an eye open for your basic model
Re: Sillitoe Lathes
Ok cool, I'll do a 3D mockup and pricing soon.
Re: Sillitoe Lathes
According to this article:Sillitoe wrote: I'm waiting to hear back from Technics in regard to the torque spec of their new 1200G turntable.
So if this is accurate, it's a decent improvement, but still not SP10 territory...Tetsuya Itani, Technics’ Chief Technical Officer, says it’s even quieter and smoother than the old one, with twice as much torque (up from 1.5kg/cm on the SL-1210MK5 to 3.3kg/cm).
Re: Sillitoe Lathes
That is a pitty.
Where did you find that quote?

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
I need to throw the guts into the cutterhead and sort tonearm and microscope placement.
I will make a few changes for future builds, plinths will be shallower by about 30mm as this one looks a little boxy.
Can't wait to hear it!

Re: Sillitoe Lathes
First quick tests with the new head are sounding promising.
Cutting chain is Ableton running software iRIAA and eq correction plugin, NI Z2 interface/ mixer, QSC GX3 power amp, 500mA fast blow fuses, Smokestack Lightning production prototype.
Myshank 320 Synthetic diamond, Myshank blank, heat lamp, no stylus heat, no vacuum (brush swarf pickup ).
Tone is 1kHz, 7cm/sec.
Playback is AT100E on a SL1200MK2, NI Mixer, Ableton.
The next ones I make will have a few tweaks but I'm happy with the overall design, I'll post a wider range of cuts with the standalone/ plug-and-play preamp setup in the next few days.

Comparison files of the original tracks.
1st track official pressing (not the source of my cut, both were cut at the same disk diameter).

2nd track, WAV source.
