Extracting Audio from Pictures

A spot for keeping track of especially cool (informative, fun) videos, photos, scans and other links about record cutting. (You can post them in other sections. Eventually they may end up here.) NOTE: Please put *Circuits, Schematics and Manuals* in the section with that name.

Direct link to the final extracted recording:

Personally, I think it could be cleaned up a lot more, but this is mostly a demonstration of the process.

(Digitally Restored) Handel's - Israel in Egypt - 1888 June 29
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEhAjcz_iYI
This is the earliest known recorded music in existence, recorded at Londons Crystal Palace in the summer of 1888. Digitally restored to remove excessive pops. Near the end, enhancement becomes impossible due to degredation of the cylinder. Includes a simulated stereo version. I spent a week a few minutes a day "cleaning" this up a bit.

I may be able to help with someone's audio archives since I find early audio recording a bit of a hobby.

Der Handschuh by Friedrich Schiller 11 November 1889 Enhancement MP3
http://k007.kiwi6.com/hotlink/7sltuvxvbh/der_handschuh_by_friedrich_schiller_11_november_1889_enhancement.mp3

Filters include: 3 stage de-esser
2 stage equalization
12ms Left/Right delay for separation
Nothing added, this was only "extraction" enhancement.

The way they SHOULD have done it:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mw9jfX4Ykxw
Which they finally did several years after the original experiments.

They spent all this time to cut it all apart and make lines out
of each revolution and then ran millions of calculations to discern
the linear speed of each revolution and just on and on and on.

And the result was terrible, til they got a brain in their head and ran
a photo-negative of it and played it through a clear turntable with a
light and a photocell as if it were an Optagon organ disc from the 70's.

And then the other way you can transfer the Edison - or any other -
disc is take a picture of it and play it back through the Virtual Turntable.
