SOLD: Scully 601 Lathe, Westrex 3D head turnkey stereo system

I'm selling my Scully 601 & Westrex 3D based turnkey stereo mastering lathe system. I've been cutting lacquers on this system since 2012 and I have cut master lacquers for over 200 titles with this rig. The 601 lathe has manual variable pitch from 70 LPI to 400 LPI, and very dynamic and efficient cuts can be made while "riding the big knob". I use Wavelab's "loudness map" of audio files as a guide to riding the big knob, and it works great. I have cut 22+ minute sides while varying the pitch between 150 LPI and 350 LPI and the results are very good once you get the hang of it. The system is also capable of very loud cuts, 12" singles, etc. It has automatic cutterhead lift/drop, and some other mechanical automation since it's a newer Scully. Cutterhead depth is currently manual/fixed and controlled by adjusting the advance ball. Variable depth can be possible by injecting a DC offset into the cutter amps, if desired. Or, a custom cutterhead suspension could be built similar to the A&M or Neumann suspension. For most cuts I don't believe there is a great advantage to variable depth, so I have stuck with fixed depth on this machine.

The amp rack is a Caruso preamp built by me, with a customized hardware EQ to even out the response, as well as a pair of Hypex UCD180hg-hxr power amplifiers also built by me. I have used several power amps with this setup, and it would be easy to change the Hypex for whatever you might prefer (Tube, Class-A solid state, etc.). Frequency response is flat +/- 1dB from 30Hz to 15kHz as measured by playback from a Denon DL-103R phono cartridge. Treble response over 15kHz is not totally linear, but the system can cut 20kHz+ tones.

It comes with:
Scully 601, complete and working well
Westrex 3D cutterhead, coils and torque tube replaced by Len & Jacob Horowitz HRS Records
Caruso/Hypex amp rack
Vacuum is a Thomas VTE-3, it's quiet and reliable. I tried several vacuums before settling on this one.
Spencer groove inspection microscope
Lathe-mounted tone arm (modified Technics 1200 arm) with cartridge and phono preamp
Scully analog variable-pitch system (amp, preamp, servo motor that turns big knob). I haven't used the auto-pitch system and it would need some work to get it going. I suspect manual pitch riding will yield better results.
Lots of blank lacquers, stylus, etc., plenty to experiment with and get started cutting.

I'm only selling this because I have built another cutting system that is just about finished. My new system is Scully based, with Lyrec direct drive, Pitch18, custom cutterhead suspension, SX74 head, custom amp rack, etc. I designed and built so much of the new system that I have become attached to it, and therefore I'm going to sell this system. I don't need two lathes and I'm sure somebody is looking for a turnkey Scully.

I can crate and ship this just about anywhere. It's probably easiest to keep it in the USA or North America, but I'm not opposed to sending it on a longer journey.

What's the price of the system? I suspect the market value of this is somewhere around USD $55,000. That is a guess on my part. I will consider any and all offers. I am not really in a hurry to sell, hopefully just sometime in the next few months.

Here are a few cuts that were done with this system:

Man that thing looks awesome! I thought my 8DG shadowed over my 6N- this scull would tower haha. Good luck with the sell! Would be interested in seeing your other set up if you ever have to to post about it.

This Scully is still available! Please get in touch if you're interested. I won't be offended by any offers. I realize the Apollo fire has made the market more uncertain, but I'm sure it's just a temporary situation until a new company is selling lacquers.

Market feels uncertain but someone will give this Scully a good home and for a worthy price! Beautiful machine. Lathe value won't be dropping like the CD era, so don't count on it ya damn trolls.

I made a simple little website today about my new lathe - I know helloheathen mentioned wanting to see it when it was finished. You can find it at http://www.guselg.com/

I'd be happy to answer any questions anybody might have about the build. Cheers-
