Wanted: Presto 8D feed screws

im assuming they are different to 6N's ???

i have a few spare 6N feedscrews

Apparently they are. I have an 8N here as well which is the same as 6N, but the 8D seem to be different.

I don't think the 8D screws were meant to be changed like on the 8N or 6N lathes as they had pulleys on the bottom to change the pitch by moving a belt. One end of the feed screw is a bearing. Where as on the 8N and 6N they have a Woodruff key on both ends.

Unfortunately, someone thought different on this lathe.....

I think the 8D and 8DG use the same feedscrew, try contacting EpicenterBryan about dimensions since he has a 8DG. There are a couple other folks that have one as well, but he's the first that comes to mind.

Hi rsimms3, thanks! Hopefully he'll have info for me to get started with some dimensions. I've got a 8GV that this is for, but the 8D and 8DG used the same parts, just a few less features than 8GV. Unfortunately, this lathe was heavily modified, dual feed screws and 16 2/3 rpm adapter on the three speed transmission. I really don't need the dual feed screws, would love to have 16 2/3, but not at the cost of 33 1/3.

Hi Rolandjays, yes, I could. There are some other parts that I will need to have made on here as well. Working on a drawing for the variable pitch drive, but need the original feed screw pitch to calculate the rpm and pulley diameters for proper gear ratios to get the 76 to 500 lines per inch and all the steps in between.

Hi, the 8D/DG/GV feedscrew is unique to these lathes. It is a square cut screw. The walls of the screw are at 90 degrees on both sides unlike typical Presto screws that use a saw tooth design. The 8D etc. use a halfnut instead of knife to engage the screw. In addition the screw has a moveable collar and gear assembly to select between outside in and inside out cutting. The odds of finding a spare are right up there with finding a NOS Scully still in its packing crate at the local goodwill for 19.99....possible but not likely!!
