On second examination, these might actually be Rek-O-Kut screws.

I think they're presto 8D or similar lead screws.
We have some at the studio, and they're definitely not the same as the Rek O Cut.
The do have the similar attached gear, but only on one side.

If these are 8D screws, could they theoretically be compatible with a 6N overhead? Could you remove the ratchet and (again, theoretically) re-machine the ends to mate up with the drive pins, or are the screws a completely different size?

I ask this since I put in a huge knee-jerk bid before I realized they weren't 6N screws - and now the other, winning bidder has retracted! D:

I don't know the answer, but i think it would be a shame to remachine them. They are rare and will be worth a heck of a lot to whomever has the correct lathe.

Not only that....good luck getting the holes in the centers aligned accurately, after the fact.

I say this as a guy working on having feed screws made. The center holes on the ends are a big, big issue.

Not worth ruining them. Sell them to someone who needs them. (This is Steve E., btw, using my tapatalk account)

I assume you could re-work the ends to fit the 6N.
one end already fits, and from what I remember, they're the same length

I Believe that these are Presto Brand, or at least work with Presto gear, due to the
other equipment (will be listing stortly) it was with.

The junction between the lead screw itself and the outer, brass colored radial gear is a one-way clutch - only rotates in one direction.

APPROXIMATELY 12" long - can of course provide detailed + accurate dimensions if you need!

I think it is a little annoying that the guy was selling them without expressing clearly which equipment they probably went with. It behooves him to describe to you what other Presto equipment he is selling.....and it's a little silly that he is not selling them WITH that equipment. Whoever buys the accompanying lathe is more likely to want these screws.

Our Oregon Presto expert might be a good guy for identifying these. I agree that they COULD be rek o cuts.

I don't know where 8D fits into the mix. I known 8N use 6N screws.

Hi,
I can confirm these screws are for the 6D and also fit the early stationary lathe from the 30's that use an early version of the 8N type overhead. They will not work on a 6N or 8N even with the clutch gears removed.

The leadscrew for the 8D has a square cut threading and uses a 4 tooth halfnut to engage the overhead. Pitch selection for 8D and 8DG is accomplished by changing the belt position on the stepped pulleys inside the lathe body. I believe the 14B studio lathe also uses the same screw, Eli would know for sure.
