Stuff not covered by the other...Forii? whatever. General goofiness. (You should not post here unless you've been contributing elsewhere on this site.)

Not sure where to find these, but, t's a hybrid between a 3D printer and a master disc electoplater.

Cutting, whether to lacquer or copper disc is, like most sculpture, a subtractive process, whereas the spirit of what one endeavors to produce for Music is positive. Ergo, why negate when one might create?

Enter, Sonny, the 3D PL-inter which is capable of having either analog or LPCM via AES/EBU input so that it will compute the best virtual map for the proposed cut choosing either loud and brief with some minor distortion, or longplaying (time) and clean with some very minor hiss noise - oh, yes, no hiss, as the cut is virtual (:, execute a virtual mastering (probably stuff it with Har-Bal w/Weiss mod), and then have the 3D PL-inter spigot _secrete_ a perfect set of ridged / ridgid stampers. Maybe it would start spitting out a PLA master and one would have to electroform from that. But, at least the "cut" would involve only additive fabrication, rather than doing it subtractively.

The Winwood mod for Sonny would entail an optical pickup which can play the stampers non-physically using a bifuraction algorithm for QA.

3d printed records no Lathe or press required. How long before this is developed? Computer simulation of a vertical lateral cut?

I was looking into this but from the perspective of using a laser to etch material away. The algorithms to plot what a groove would look like given a WAV file is not terribly complex. Essentially, you plot the groove as one long image file using color to determine depth. White = no cut. Black = Max cutting depth. Shades of gray are a depth between nothing and max.

Take the long image and paint it to a concentric path. Adjust the curve of the path as you pack the image so as to maximize the horizontal space. Add lead in/lead out groove. There you have it.
