1C10 Recordio Restoration

I just managed to get ahold of one of these monsters. Now I plan to keep working on my 7D44 but this is next in line.

Let’s start this off with some questions. What type of needle is this? And how does this cartridge manage to work with both cutting and recording? Is it easier to replace than say... a x-26 or x-27?

Thanks.

The crystal has been repaired and the caps have arrived. Time to get to work.

It would appear that on 50s recordio models, the sound is routed both into and out of the cartridge, necessitating a crystal.

Work is finally underway on this! I am now replacing caps and I recently purchased one of those J&J tubes to replace the 12AX7. This is very much a welcome change of pace from the 7D44.

Caps and tubes are replaced and the unit has been reassembled. Haven’t tested out the cutting function or any of the tape functions but phono and PA work great. I’ll be testing out the cutting next week.

The only part of the turntable that needed to be replaced were the disintegrated plastic spacers on the motor. Just got some rubber ones from ACE.

Thanks!

Last update, the Recordio makes for a nice restored phonograph for playing 78’s. Unfortunately the cutting is a different story. It seems like the replacement crystal is not robust enough to be decently loud or beat the noise floor and I’m probably best getting a Presto or something at this point.

I would not recommend to go through this whole process if you are expecting nice out of the box results but would if you want a quirky old phono and tape set.
