theres a video clip a few posts up with some audio

i will look at stffening the head up a bit more

im going to do some more tests but im def running into resonance issues

its a huge learning curve for me but im getting lots of gain and my grooves are nice and tight and im getting about 4 min
at 33 on a cdr

its not to bad

cheers

ive found cutting vocals to be a an excercise is surgical eqing but its coming along

i cut everything out at 300 hz
everything above 8000
reverse riaa
scoop out 500 hz
scoop out 4000hz

this makes vocals very intelligible

im learning where the resonances are

ive figured out i have a lot of cutter head motor noise translating onto my cuts

im going to strip my machine down and install rubber washers everywhere i can to isolate the the noise a bit

its not a horrible noise but its something i can improve with simple mechanical mods

cheers

i have rebuilt my lathe i aquired a nice solid idler drive turntable and im going to make a jig to slide the deck in under
my lathe so gone is the belt drive deck that did not give me solid speed control

ive also switched mediums for embossing i have found a solid plastic plate i can cut into 7'' blanks, after a few experiments i found that glueing a backer board of cardstock to the flimsy plate makes a nice record that wont warp easy on the lathe

i got really nice sonic results embossing on this new disc after noodling with this

ill post pics later on

cheers

Hi Fred,
The security suite on my PC prevents me from accessing the uploads you've made (Don't ask me Why??). Any chance of sticking them up on YT?? If not, what's your assessment of the performance of the Dayton Exciters? Are you happy with the Levels they can Output??

ill put it up on soundcloud

they have tremendous output capability and i think they work very well

i am now in the process of finding out what the resonant frequencys are
i have ran pink noise thru my head and recorded it and found out where the
faults are

Hi Fred,
Thanks for that assessment, I got a listen of the SC Upload and gotta say I'm impressed, not that much "Noise" at all, on the Lead-in. And the music seemed to be comming thru loud and clear. Fantastic Job so far Fred.

its coming and so far im using no off the shelf parts

id like to try some actual purpose made needles as right now im using a sharpened piece of steel

ive recorded all kinds of music with my lathe and im getting good results with instrumentals
vocals are a pain but thats what im working on with finding the resonances, im using a parametric eq to forensicly zero in
on the problem areas of the audio

its a proccess thats for sure

im having fun

Hi Fred,
You've made massive strides so far, and moved your project along very quickly indeed. I can't help but think of the improvements you could possibly enjoy, if you perhaps used more "Rigid" Materials in the Construction of the Cutterhead Frame. It looks like you may be using Stiff Cardboard?? If not Aluminium, perhaps you could even use some thick Perspex/Acrylic, the sheet is cheap enough, and you can make it into an Angle like this :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rkpqfcg1W_o or here maybe :- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wVEf7PfuKxo Maybe you have an old or broken Acrylic Turntable Dust Cover you could possibly re-purpose?? Just a few thoughts eh?

i have many dust covers thats a great idea

i think i may go with some kind of alloy tho or mdf
there are also options like a 3d printer they have a few of these around at public libraries

cheers and thanks

let me know how your head turns out with the drivers i really like them and they were super easy to work with

i think making a stiffer head and bolting the drivers in place would def be better

Hi Fred,
Well if you've got some old Acrylic Dust Covers you're Halfway there already. If it's a little bit thin, it's really quite easy to laminate it, with some Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue Type) Adhesives, Double or even Triple Thickness would ensure the Cutterhead Frame's "Stiffness" so that you get the utmost, out of the Dayton Exciters. Now I can't wait to test my "Soul Sculptor" Cutterhead propperly. I only did some Totally Non-Scientific Tests of pressing a "Dummy" Stylus, Up to the Metal Chassis of my Gas Fire. I've gotta say the Reproduction of the Music was really Loud and Clear Te He!!

I thought that by making/using a "Stiffer" Cutterhead Frame that you might see an Improvement "Step Change" in your Cutterhead's Performance.

after doing the pink noise process and creating a template for cutting and also stiffening the head i have noticed a drastic
improvement

heres the result
