i think my plan for discs may be to buy a bandsaw and cut the discs myself with a template i figure a weekend of cutting mackrolon would get me enough to last a while and with both sides protected i should be fine

Hi,

I would consider a router and a circle cutting jig (can be home made) rather than a bandsaw. You'll get nice clean repeatable circles that way. Also much smaller and not too expensive.

i added some more cross braces to my head and ive pretty much destroyed any resonances i had before

now the task is to chase out motor noise

i pretty much have the lathe motor for the head isolated but now the platter rim drive is the culprit
its not horrible but noticeable on big bass speakers

a couple of times since ive had my rig ive tried to record direct to disc from my tube mic and gotten horrible results but after reading about what kind of outboards people use with their rigs i tried an experiment where i ran the tube mic through my daw and some plugins with the direct monitoring off so all the cutter amp heard was the audio after the processing on the master bus of my daw , i had a multiband compressor which i used to tame the peaks and also cut off the bass at around 475 hz and i also put my cutterhead eq template i made from the pink noise recording to help get rid of cutterhead resonance

the result was clear lo fi but enjoyable intelligible audio strait from my tube mic to my cutter head in almost real time(processing latency is only slight i have a pretty fast cpu.)
i dont think the latency will ever be a problem if im recording a solo or group of musicians as it would all be acoustic and in the round in fact they would never know unless i told them

this is really what i want to get into as its something no one else in my area offers
i have a lot of work still to do with my lathe in regards to quartz locked stable speed(i want a 1200 or sp10)

but after i get it working like i want i will start doing this

scored a direct drive deck with pitch and it has a very nice torque and quartz lock at 33

the current state of my head i added the cross braces for rigidity but ended up cutting
out some of one of them for clearance, i will add some thin plastic pieces to reinforce

the bottom base of the lathe the tennis balls help resist unwanted vibrations from the floor
we used to use these to put 1200s on during big raves for anti feedback

the deck i used for this i already had , i did score another one but it would not keep pitch
this is a gemini xl 500 the 1st version and does have the same torque as a 1200 (1.5kg)

i put some foam between the top layer of wood of the lathe base and the bottom base

where the deck will sit under the lathe gantry

the gemini deck has weight added to it its somewhere around 33 lbs

the lathe mounted over the deck and deck in position

more foam between the lathe gantry and base to help with motor noise

lathe assembled and head mounted and aligned

platter has extra weight added to it
and rubber mat is secured to platter

so decided to do something about the motor noise transfering to the records during embossing
this new system does not tottally get rid of it but it no longer sounds like mechanical noise just a very
low hum well below the noise floor of the recordings themselves i am very happy with this i have eliminated
at least half of the noise and also i have no more platter noise as i have a direct drive deck.

the motor is mounted to a weighted mic stand and a geared belt drives the lathe

this also allows me to quickly remove the belt and quickly move the cutter head back into position for a new cut

i also added a second gear to the motor to do things like increase lines per inch so i can record audio at 45rpm or record at 33 with audio slowed down to play back at 45, having two sized gears gives me more options for recording and recording time.

i can cut/emboss 12:30 with my smaller gear lpi
and 20:30 with the bigger gear lpi

so reg groove and micro i guess

i have no idea what lpi i have but i know both track well and are relative to
pressings i have

this track did not translate well too much phase issues
good gain and no distortion just swirling audio

not all modern music translates well even in mono

i have cut some techno that did turn out ok just depends on the production
