How does a mother record sounds?
A bit weird question perhaps, but has anyone tried to play a mother (the negative used to make a record stamper)
I'm interested how it sounds...
thanks

It takes a special player

Well, if you can even fit it on your turntable and get it to lie flat, it sounds virtually identical to the finished pressing.
In the old days, this was played back, checked and any ticks and pops were noted.
Being nickel, it will wear out your stylus pretty quickly, so styli for this purpose were re-sharpened.
Pip Pip!

I know that it can be played back using a special v spahed stylus
but how does it sound when played back with a normal stylus?
I imagine quite distorted...

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
Too much variation in lpi with moderns records. But i am going to just tell you what you want to hear; it sounds like inside out aliens from uranus shooting lazer powered rock guitars into your ears and straight back out of uranus into the substrate of the 9th dimension oh also did i mention SLAYER played backwards sounds just like sweet baby james....ok back to work

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
Your question is not clear.
A mother is a positive and can be played on a regular turntable if it fits. The stylus will wear out very fast. You should hear more pronounced highs. You should play it wet.
The father and the stamper are negatives. These require a special turntable with a special stylus.
I hope that clears up the difference for you.

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
thanks - I see how it is unclear.
What I am interested in is how a negative record sounds played back with a normal stylus - if there is any resemblance to the original audio, or if the needle simply skips...

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
There is no usable audio information in the valleys of a negative record, because all audio is in the ridges that will press it into the grooves of the record.tape wrote:thanks - I see how it is unclear.

Actually,i have used glue to clean albums and when i peel the glue off i have a negative,i have played them and you get half of the signal and half of the signal of the next groove.very spooky sounding.

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
interesting!
could you describe it more in detail?
Not sure what 'half the signal' should sound like?

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
It seemed like you were getting the left channel of one side of the ridge and maybe the right channel on the other side but it would the next groove on the record,so the combined signal were two different things.makes me want to post a video of it.i will go to the lab today and post it here tonight

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
great!
looking forward to hear it.
Cant really wrap my brain around what is actually being played on a negative - I guess there should be silence in the 'grooves' but appreaantly not

Re: How does a mother record sounds?
as far as negatives of records go: they sound surprisingly like the record themselves as long as you play them backwards. like a user mentioned above you can make a negative of a record with some woodglue and try for yourself.
here's a glue negative copy of a record, played forwards and backwards on regular turntable, that i happen to have just used in a radio-program about my woodglue records project.
weird but true: an inside-out groove sound still just sounds like the same music...

Great that someone took the trouble to test it!
Thank you!

I just don't get why the negative would sound like everything played backwards....
