Half scale VMS 70

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Was in the shop today.

Made the 2 screws to hold the scale to the side of the way body.

I have some black plastic backed aluminium that'll do for the scale.

Not sure how to apply the lettering to it...

Still need to drill holes in it.

I don't have a shear so I needed to cut the thin aluminium by hand. I scored it with a knife and held it between two parallels to wiggle it till it cracked along the score line.

I made the pointer that hangs on the swan neck.

I still need to make a shaft to mount it properly.

And.... After 2 years, I have completed the major mechanical components.

Still need to make a suspension box, cutting head & decide where to mount the leadscrew drive motor...

Next up, a half scale SAL74B?
Actually with modern parts that should be entirely doable...

The half scale Studer Preview deck might be a bit of a pain however, while cassette tape is 1/8th of an inch, so the media is available, there may be quality issues.

Wish mine was going as well, just had a pile of laser cut steel turn up with the both the base plates being wrong in one way or another, a kinematic constraint problem on one and a simple case of measurement screwup in the other.
Still, laser cut steel is basically cheap, so it is mostly the waiting that is annoying.

Hi All,

As with all things, it takes longer than you think it will.

If I had some money I could speed up the next part of the project (mostly electrical / electronic parts).

Would anyone be interested in making their own half scale VMS or making it from parts?

I'm considering selling new parts based on my work so far.

Basically you can buy the bits you don't feel comfortable making and make the ones you do feel comfortable making.

I understand well what you mean!

The project turned out great! I hope you can find the necessary money to complete the artwork. I would love to see it finished! (But as we know: as with all things, it takes longer than you think).

Congratulations
Thomas

Hi Thomas,

I was looking at your cutter head. Its very professionally done but I wonder if you shouldn't just bite the bullet and go 100% home made by winding your own coils.

While tweeters may be convenient I can't help but think they are not ideal and given the splendid effort you have already made I can't think that winding coils would be much of a task for you.

Also, and for me this is the most important advantage, it gives you complete freedom over the design and fit of the connection from the coil to the bridge which seems to be a problematic area.

Because I have wound coils, I suspect I am biased about the effort required but for someone with your skill and attention to detail, I cannot think it will be much of a challenge for you and may end up saving you effort further down the line.

Whatever you decide , your work is an inspiration to us all.

Thanks for the motivating words! And I would also like to thank you for the constructive criticism and the suggestion to wind the coils myself. In the meantime I have reworked the cutter head (CH-9 I will post soon) and wound the coils myself. Only the housing with magnets from the resonance speaker I have taken over - here the effort of self-manufacture is not worth it.
Thanks and good luck with your project
Thomas

Yes, retaining the housing and magnet is a sound idea.

I look forward to seeing more of your posts on this project.
