Scooty Turn Jr. BLDC Closed Loop Direct Drive Platter Motor

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Scooty Turn Jr. BLDC Closed Loop Direct Drive Platter Motor

In July I started development of a BLDC platter motor. I went through 5 distinct designs until I reached what is a very stable, very strong, and very accurate BLDC platter motor for lathes. The video below details the 3 month journey.

Details:
- Mag Lift Bearing with zero metal on metal contact at the bottom of the rotational axis
- 18 Coils
- 3 Phases
- Neodymium Magnets
- 3 Hall Sensors for Motor Control
- 2 additional Hall Sensor for my custom closed loop speed regulation logic
- Custom PSU
- Off the Shelf Motor Controller
- Custom Speed Regulation logic on an Arduino
- Custom Brass sleeve and Aluminum Piston Rod both machined by me
- All the torque you need to cut and code to insure any cutterhead drag is immediately compensated
- 3d printed body
- 3d printed motor stator body
- Steel Cores for all Coils

I'm almost finished with my complete cutting system called PLS19. I will be starting a new thread for the lathe. I'll be demoing the system at NAMM in January of 2020. All PLS19 systems with come standard with a Scooty Turn Jr. direct drive platter motor. I'll be taking fabrication orders starting February of 2020.

Much more to come soon!!!

I've redesigned some parts a bit, re-cut my plinth, and have lowered the motor a lot. Here's what things are looking like now.

Improved precision brass piston and sleeve. Improved tonearm rest and lock. Center pin now with threaded hole in center top for disc locking attachment. 100 Hz strobe for Technics platter. And, overhead locking feet.

Your latest motor design is looking great.

I was a bit dubious about the early prototype but this latest one... just Wow!

Consider using ground round rod for the shaft & an oilite bush for the bore.

Saves any machining & they come in all sorts of tolerances at a very reasonable price.

Cheers,

Wilson.
