Making presto 6n feedscrews out of wooden dowels?

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Making presto 6n feedscrews out of wooden dowels?

I saw this video on youtube:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=rS8gAxr_yxE

And it gave me a idea of making feedscrews out of wooden dowels for the Presto 6n.

Has anyone attempted this?

Any ideas why it wouldnt work?

Hi,

Clever idea. Not sure you could get the tight pitch needed. For a 160 LPI feedscrew, you need 20 threads per inch given the 8:1 ratio of the 6N. Also not sure how you would be able to get the correct thread form (buttress) using a rotating cutter. It would be fun to try.

An interesting idea. But from a practical and time stand point... You should just order one with what ever LPI you want from ROLANDJAYS. I can personally vouch for the quality of his machine work.
Check out his recent thread here:

Oh yes i have ordered a Feedscrew from Rolandjays awhile ago for my 6n and its really well made.

The wooden dowel would be a interesting thing if someone pulled it off.

OK, I get it...
A cool idea but I don't think anyone could achieve in wood what John can in metal. But then again, if you were to insist on having it done for some artistic reason, I'm sure John could do it assuming the the material you specify is hard as rocks! But I really don't know. You should poke at John...

In my opinion, you should talk with a machinist about what you want and why, and close the thread. No body is going to make a lead screw in wood unless someone pays them to do it...

Fair enough.

Just a idea to see if anyone did it or if they had a wooden lathe to try amd experiment.

We are in the experimenters area ?

I like this cutter that Gieskes made awhile back.
I can see him doing something with dowels and the like.
