DIY Lathe + CuttingHead - Sillon'R - Clem

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

DIY Lathe + CuttingHead - Sillon'R - Clem

Hi everybody,

I publish my first thread to show you my work. I just begin a lathe and cutting head.
I still have a lot of work to do. I hope to get some advice and critics from you.
I just tested it, but result was very bad ! So I will post some rip extracts later !
I use a Dremel diamond engraver as stylus. 15€ and CDR polycarbonate.
Very much surface noise and superposition of grooves !

I try to make my CNC lathe with 3d print parts. I use my audio technica lp120 as a lathe.
To made my cutting head, I print in 3D the body (PLA) and use Sparkfun transducers.
I tried to make my cutting head with only removables pieces. Nothing is glued.
But it's a too hard challenge. I think I will change the design and glue push rods to the torque tube.

My torque tube and my V-spring are made of aluminium (respectively alu can and alu tube).
I tapped (tarauder) the inside of my torque tube and assembled it to the V-spring with a nylon screw. They are screwed togheter.
My pushrods arenot glued too, they are monted in force. They are thin brass tube (a little ferrous) folded at 90°. (2mm diameter).
My assembly isn't precise enough to make a good cut. Nothing is mounted right. And i have some angular problem too.

Here some pictures of my work :

ensemble cnc graveur.jpg
20170131_224449.jpg

I know i have some progress to make but i hope to be on the right pass.
Soon, some new picture with better quality And news on the progress.

Bye
Clément from France (Nantes) ^^ !

Hi crowesBR,

I bought large sparkfun transducers : https://www.sparkfun.com/products/10975
3W i think. There is a datasheet on the website.

Hi,

I work a bit on my lathe during the summer and the last 2 months.
I modified my lathe in something like Cuien's ZEZ Cutter Style with 3d print parts. I put a system to lift and drop the head manually.
Have no damping (spring or dashpot) but just an elastic. it is very usefull to secure the head of falling on my turntable with my stylus fit in. Already hapenned ...!
I placed a counterweight made with bolt on a threaded shaft to adjust the weight and pressure of my cutting head.
ARISIAN2.jpg
My lathe is now a Numark TTX turntable, I bought it for a very good price but the platter have some wobble.
The torque is impressive (4.5 kgcm) and motor have low noise contrary to the Audio Technica.
I hope to find an other better second-hand Numark TTX or Stanton ST 150.

My motor stepper (NEMA) make a lot of noise and vibrations during cutting.
I'm looking to replace it with maybe this kind of 12V stepper motor :
https://www.gotronic.fr/art-moteur-35byj412-22005.htm
I just have to find how to drive this stepper motor ! An ULN2003 will be OK I think.

I invest in a heating lamp 150W InfraRed bulb usually used for reptil !
I don't have thermometer to control the temperature of the disc. I put it 15cm away from the surface have to wait 5min and it's very hot.
ARISIAN3.jpg
I modified my Sparkfun transducers to lighten them.
For that, I machined (with my Dremel!) the metal suspension spring and add an aluminium cone made with a sardin box!
Don't know if this is the best ! but it is stiff and light !
One transducer weight is about 5g now. My weighin machine is not accurate enough.
ARISIAN.jpg
I made my cutting head block with my own 3D printers in PLA, 100% density so the part is full.
My V-spring also print in PLA and is 1mm thick.
My torque tube is a 2.9mm brass rod.
I fix my stylus with a 2.5mm domino.
ARISIAN4.jpg
To be continued ... In the Next Post !

Hi,

Here a cut I made with the music of a friend on a CDrom.
At 45 rpm. Heating with Lamp. Turtle Waxed. No EQ just inv-RIAA with Audacity.
I cut with tungstene stylus I bought on eBay (link below).

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Tungsten-needle-styli-stylus-presto-in-rek-o-kut-record-lathe-cutter-recorder/282085273984

The cutting angle is close to vertical.
I tried with a cutting angle close to 15-20° as preconise, but there was more background noise. I maybe made something wrong...
I don't know which pressure i'm applying on the surface of the disk...

Audio is from my computer and pass into my amplifier (an old Kenwood KA-305 2 x 40W from 1973)
The CDrom is fixed with double-sided tape on the platter.

I rip the cut with USB of my other turntable : an Audio Technica LP-120-USB.
I don't have problem to track my groove on playback (2.5g weight on the tonearm)

Unfortunatly not really improvement in the sound quality. I made cutting little better than this one but ... nothing fantastic.
Here is some sound and frequency spectrum obtain in Audacity

https://www.dropbox.com/s/q8s76q67amgxhj6/LaBotanique%20-%20Science%20Fiction_RIP_22082017.wav?dl=0
spectre.JPG
And I don't have an equalizer, So I research a free DAW to add equalisation.
I only have Audacity for the moment and it seems to be not very usefull to make my own equalisation curve...!

Do you know if printing cutting head body in ABS will have some positive influence ? ABS is stiffer than PLA.
Or maybe made my a frame from aluminium plate...?

I know some of you made your cone with varnished paper.
Do you think is it very important to switch to paper ? lighter ?

Do you have any suggest to improve and flatten my frequency response ...?
My record aren't very loud too.

I want to enhance my knownledge on embossing before turn to cutting.
I know some of you make incredible lathecut by embossing (piaptk, fredbissnette, and many others I didn't know, sorry !)

Thanks for all your help !
ARISIAN5.jpg
PS : I'm also trying to use Daytona exciters, seems to have a lower mobile mass and handle more power 24W / 4 Ohms.
I hope to have best results in high frequency...
The damping wasn't very stiff so I brushed with some Textil rigidifier on the spider suspension spring. (7 layers).
I think will post a new message soon to present some results of this other cutting head.

And I just see that I forget to desactiv the Loundness on the Amplifier.

Hi,

The head looks nice. The response looks pretty good. You will need to add EQ. RIAA is needed for compatibility with the standard playback setup, but even a pro head needs an extreme amounts of EQ to flatten the response. Is part of the physics of this type of head. Cut pink or white noise (the type depends on the spectrum analyzer you use) for an octave based analyzer, use pink noise, FFT based use white. Process the nose test signal with RIAA encoding and check your playback response. Flatten the playback response using an EQ (be careful not to go too far at the high end). Use this EQ setting along with the RIAA to cut your next test with music. The results should be much better.

Mark

Thank you for your response.

I'll try this as soon as I can with my two cutting heads.
It seems so simple and understandable when you say it, that I do not know why I didn't think of it earlier !

Thanks Bye

this is stunning, brother. keep up good work! for checking weight use little digital jubilee scale, costs about 5-10eur on ebay and will measure your weight in 0,01g precision

Hi, Yes I have some updates
I'm in holydays right now so I've some time to give you my results of the last weeks (months...!).

I left my Numark TTX because of the platter.
I just grab from a friend a Technics SL1200 mk2 with a broken tonearm.
Less Torque but the platter is well-balanced and have less wobble.
It works quite fine but I will certaintly have to switch to an other good and cheap solution later.
Put a precision platter on a Stanton ST 150...? Will have to find a way to adapt magnet on the new platter...?

I replace my Nema stepper motor with a smaller one (12v) which doesn't make much noise and vibrations.
But I've also problem with this one : space between grooves isn't always the same.
I think the motor forces in rotation at some point, maybe because my screw isn't well aligned or my motor doesn't have enough torque...

I made embossing cone from gramophone stylus as I see someone else made on the forum. It works really well.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Red-Turntable-Diamond-Stylus-Needle-for-Gramophone-LP-Vinyl-Record-Player-Phono-/182587606973
cone embossage.JPG
I Drilled a 0,4mm hole in a 1.5mm diameter brass rode and put the stylus in.

I test cutting onto 1mm Marlon Brett Martin, 1mm Lexan Sabic.
And I have best results with a thicker 1.5mm Makrolon Bayer.
Would like to try on Black PC. Maybe the background noise willn't be the same.

From the advices of Markrob, I made an equalization filter from a white noise cut.
I made the compensation curve with a equalizer on fruity loops. Look in the same time to a spectrograph. Don't have fabfilter.
I'm making the invRIAA curve treatment on Audacity.

So I have some progress. You can listen following this link :
https://www.dropbox.com/s/6x6klb8pjmh5tuz/Labotanique%20-%20L%27aventure%20des%20Plantes_EQ_1_RIP.wav?dl=0

L'aventure des plantes_spectre fréquence_EQ1_RIP.JPG
I created a V-spring in brass to add stiffness that I want to test.
I'll maybe switch to cutting.

Thank you for your advices. I don't kown what to do now.

There sound like a heap of high frequency response for an embossing... I'm keen to have a look at it in an analyser tomorrow.

Have you tried turtle wax and crc on the blank? I think that could remove a lot of the background noise...

Hi jjwharis,
Yes I use Turtle Wax. Don't let it dry. Never try CRC...
