cdr spindle adapter

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

When I 'repurposed' an old Soundscriber dictating machine to CD/DVD embossing use, a machinist friend made me this little 2-piece adapter:

The brass part is actually fastened permanently to the turntable, and the aluminum sleeve screws down onto it to hold the disc during recording. If you are going back and forth between record blanks and CDs, this probably isn't practical, as you'd have to use an Allen wrench to remove the adapter from the turntable spindle each time. One elegant approach might be to have something like this adapter permanently fixed to an old, stripped lacquer blank. Your thin 'platter' would sit on the recording turntable and allow easy on/off of CDs. It would add a small fraction of an inch to the thickness of the CD, but I doubt that you'd have to adjust the head. This would be similar to the 'slip-start' adapter platters radio DJs used for 45s. They found that a simple plastic spindle adapter often popped up and the record slipped under it, trying to do a slip-start holding just the 45.

Well, here are a couple of more ideas.

1) The case that most packs of CD/DVDs come in has a center spindle that's somewhat under the 15mm diameter of the CD centerhole. One of these spindles could be cut into 1/2" sections to form an adapter. The ones I have here have a larger hole down the middle than the 9/32" turntable spindle, but that could be reduced with layers of tape or whatever.

2) Evidently 15mm is a standard size rod for SLR camera support rails. You can get anodized aluminum ones pretty cheap from Amazon:

The only trouble is that they're hollow, and threaded internally with a 12mm female thread. But at least the outside diameter is right, and you could fill these with epoxy and then drill a 9/32" hole in the middle.

Still thinking.

Thanks for that link, Fela; I'm going to contact that guy and get a few. I'll ask him first if he has a picture.

Thanks, piaptk. Can you post ordering instructions here, for anyone interested to see and respond to, or would you prefer a PM? I assume a small quantity of five or ten could ship in a JiffyBag by First Class mail.
