What could go wrong with an mc 41 head that would make it non fuctional. C such as magnet wire. Or link or whatever. Could the. Magnet be tired or am I missing something. Wondering if I should change the link with new steel. One. Can appoxy work to hold it in place.

Are you talking about the Astatic M41 head? It's easy to re-wind if the coil is blown.

Yes. M 41. Head. I've rewired several times. Got it to work some what. But it wasnt loud enough. But kept rewiring it. What guage type of wire should I use. Is there a test to see if the magnets ok?? And that its working properly.??? I want it wired for 10 ohms so it won't burn out aga in.. had gib reduce the coils but wouldn guarantee a rewound. So he stuck me with a crystal head. I want magnetic. :( .. would 10 ohms ruin my stereo?? Ps no tube amp .. I smashed it with a hammer.. if I can't get it working.. I may use a spkr. I've wound coils before but a record cuttrr this is difficult for me.

First, if you used a crystal head on a machine built for one, then replaced it with a magnetic one it's no surprise it burned up as crystal heads require more voltage than a magnetic. The usual gauge of magnet wire for an M41 is somewhere between 35 and 45; pretty fine stuff. Lower (larger) gauges won't work as well with such a small head. If you disassemble the head and check how well the magnet 'clings' to metal, that will tell you if it's still OK. The M41 uses a small block magnet, and if the head hasn't been taken apart and left apart for a long time, it should be OK.

You aren't going to get a great deal of volume from an M41. They weren't professional heads by far, and in my opinion, of lesser quality than a good crystal head of the time like the X26.

And smashing a vacuum tube amp simply because you don't understand it is pretty daft...

I replaced my metal link. It was filed down.so it wssnt msking contact to the stems on the msgnetic heads. I used a new magnet I got from the hardware. Store. I'm just prototyping this. Its been dead for 6 yrs. I cansbalized the motor wire for my head. I figured motor would be easy to rebuild. Besides the motor links inside were burned to the chore. Ill keep my eyr on ebay for a motor. Or gibs # handy.. but think I'm judt going to wire a spkr direct to the linr in plaate. Judt connect my stereo. It should work. Msg
