Picnic Plate Cutters

Anything goes! Inventors! Artists! Cutting edge solutions to old problems. But also non-commercial usage of record cutting. Cost- effective, cost-ineffective, nutso, brilliant, terribly fabulous and sometimes fabulously terrible ideas.

Picked up a stack of light green and they actuallyt sounded better than the ones from Safeway. And luckily they started selling 50 packs for $10 which is much better than the 20 packs for $7.99. I must have tried them out back before I knew what I was doing. Thanks for the tip.

Have you ever tried the Gold plates??

You would just have to insert a link to the download file.

Here is a link to some of my lathe cuts that were cut on picnic plates

http://soundcloud.com/10shun-tenshun/03-03-strangled

http://soundcloud.com/10shun-tenshun/04-04-scabz

both were cut on a Presto 6n with a Audax R H5 cutting head with no heat.

I also have a track on there that was cut on a Apollo Audio disc 10" with the same set up. the Apollo disc transfers sound so much better with no surface noise.

Sounds really good... a little better than my own cuts even... I need to try transferring some of my cuts over to see what they sound like digitally. what kind of plates are you using? Where do you get them? Using Apollo long shank styli or old sapphires?

That's a TON less noise than I get with a long shank sapphire... but I'm using junkier plates. I plan on getting some from Party City this weekend, and I'll post some results as well.

Does any one know how harsh these plates are on a playback needle?

they are generally pretty easy on needles, but I have ruined three needles on standard cutting (not counting drops, etc) after about 1000 plates.

Thank you for the feedback.

As for the cutting needle i am using a long shank sapphire. I got lucky when i bought the lathe because the person included a bunch of needles so im good to go for a while.

The sound is running through a Akai EA-A7 Equalizer and then through a Pyramid pa800x amp.

The plates i am using are red picnic plates from Ralphs grocery they like $6.00 for a pack of 50.

So you tilt the head back a little bit from the looks of it?

yeah i have it tilted back like 5 degrees or so. As it says in the presto manual. The same angle works for cutting on acetates also.

I would love to hear a side by side with the original audio, just to see how much of that gritty compression and distortion is a result of the cut.

Alot of my music is already kind of distorted and gritty . The lathe just sort of compresses the sound and makes it sound like it was recorded on cassette.

Thats one reason why i love these lathe cutters.
