Hi all. I was wondering what happened to HD Vinyl Project for a while. Strangely enough, I came across this news today

How do you cut a reference copy?

How do you check to see how the audio reacts to the format?

Do you wait until a test pressing?

That is crazy.

Exactly. That's assuming it works at all. I can't help but thinking this second PR round means they blew through the original funding and need more to throw down the drain.

About every year or so since 2009 I have heard someone new come out with the great idea of cutting masters using some kind of laser setup, still haven't seen a working prototype

The closest I have seen anyone get to a sensible idea was a university in Germany who were basically just replacing the stylus with two lasers, but last I heard about that was 5 years ago.

I don't understand how "ceramic stampers" are supposed to work, has anyone involved in this every actually seen a record press before? I'm baffled.

Ceramic is much harder than nickel and so the stampers will last much longer.
The question is.... will it work?

Does anyone know if there are any companies that (can) make moulds for ceramic stampers? Possibly outside the vinyl record manufacturing industry?

Also, with regard to reference copies - wouldn't that be the same process as for DMM?

Maybe that is one reason DMM never really took off too.

After studying it a little I wrote this piecehttp://doctorvinilo.blogspot.com/2018/06/hd-vinyl.html although in spanish, I'd love to get your suggestions, corrections or opinions.

Thanks in advance

Back in the day there were 12" copper blanks that refs were cut on.
I don't know if any of the DMM facilities offer copper refs today..??

In theory, it is possible to send a DMM ref. And I think that some specialized cutting studios (AR, PA, RT, ...) may do that if paid well. We don't do it as we have DMM plates just for our production cutting (and sometimes even less plates than required), so we wouldn't be able to produce more Cu plates to send them to our customers. Test pressings are more important to most of them to hear also electroforming and pressing quality and possible issues.
DMM never really took off in the US, but it is quite different here in Europe. I may guess 25-30 % of all the pressed vinyl records (titles, not pieces) worldwide are produced by DMM these days...

In fact, I once got a quote from a European record pressing plant, offering 500 dollar pressing (100 pcs) when I used their DMM technology. That's a steal if you ask me, especially for the cost of DMM cutting!

With a new $4.8 million investment, an Austrian startup says it could have “HD vinyl” in stores by 2019
