VMS 70 -- Transmission/Clutch?

Anybody know what this is called? I have been through the manual and see parts labeled on it, but not the whole assembly itself.

Is it possible for this to slip? One of mine seems to be doing that (or a belt slipping, but have not figured that out yet). I see it has a vent screw, an oil level indicator and a fill screw.

Does anybody have any documentation about how full, what kind of oil and proper fill procedure? The manual seems remarkably mute on this part of the lathe. Any info would help and it would be nice to get the knowledge out there if this really is not covered in the manual!

As always, thanks!

I've always head it a called a "differential". I think it's more likely that the belt is slipping. There are gears in there. I've never heard of there being a problem with one of those. You can tension the pitch drive belt by moving the roller on the arm. Clean the roller with acetone to remove rubber. The screw should be open. The oil always looks about half way up.

Thanks Paul! Differential is a good word for that. Good info.

Depending on it's condition, you might be able to flip that belt inside out too.

I have not been with this machine when it has happened, but both my other cutters had an experience where when they pushed "spiral", the carriage moved slow or not at all, they both feel the half nut was engaged and not slipping. I have cleaned and tightend the belts. My one cutter said there was noise coming from the pitch box like a motor was straining. Would this be the "fast" motor that sits on top? We keep waiting for the issue to repeat when I am actually present, but it seems like after everything has warmed up, the issue goes away.

You can check the hex bold on the pully of the fast motor. it could be loose.

It could also be an electronic problem with the associated AS card.

Have you checked the bank of micro switches at the back of the lathe
May be a good idea.
They rearely play up but it could be another source of your issue
Best
