tips for production and "mixing down" before maste

Hi,
Im interested in starting my own independent record label, but have never had any of my own tunes cut or professionally mastered.
Can you give me any tips that I could apply during the production mix down stages which would make the next steps easier/better for the person/s involved.
correct me if i'm wrong, i understand that if i wanted a higher volume that track length is shortened, also i remember someone telling me if i wanted a really bassy sounding record the overall volume will be decreased.
I know its a vast topic. But any guidelines pointers will be much appreciated.
thanks
