HELP!!! confused with engineering course work!!

hi,
need help with how a treadle brake works on a hand central lathe
looked over the internet and doesnt help one iotta
just need to know what happens inside the lathe once the kick stop has been kicked and the chuck stopping,
also how do you check its working properly with out turning it on and kicking it - as we all do lol
very simple questions bloody hard answer!!!!!!

At first I thought you were talking about some sort of machine for throwing pottery - now I see it's some sort of wood or metal lathe.
We deal with the machines that cut old fashioned records (the black things with grooves) on this forum.
Any machinists here???
