New lathes

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

New lathes

I have built three new lathes, different concept, fixed cutterhead and moving platter. Modified Technics SP-10 Mk3 to use with vacuum from underneath, Flokason Pitch18 and Maxon motor, high precision feed screw custom made in Germany, suspension box with depth coil to use with Neumann, Ortofon or Swiss made cutterheads, long Grace tonearm with Ortofon 2M black system. TMC air damped optical table.
Good news: Working excellent! Bad news: sold already...

Impressive, you sold all three?

Moving platter is interesting.

The moving platter is nothing new; lathes built for acoustic recording on wax (Lindstrom, Scully, etc.) had the platter moving under the recorder. This was because the horn or horns of varying sizes and shapes used for recording, couldn't move along with an overhead or sled assembly as with modern lathes. Easier to move the disc under the fixed recorder.

Not sure this will work, but if you get to the website, click the thumbnail for a larger image. If you look closely, there is a D spec recorder mounted on the machine for electric recording, but this photo features the setup as it would have been for mechanical (acoustic) recording.

First step: 1:1 model made of wood and paper... second step: a lot of work!

Suspension boxes... depth coil with carbon body, light and stiff. With oil damping pot and switch for heat.

Some more pictures of the process. New center spindles made for the Technics sP-10 MK3 turntable with drilled hole for vacuum from underneath, depth coils (winding was no fun...)

Yes, very well planned, meticulous and precision work!! I took metal shop in high school and was very interested in machining, but didn't pursue it. I do understand what painstaking work doing something like this would require. 8)

Beautiful work. Do you have any photos of your machine shop you’d like to share?
