Left right phase issue

This is where record cutters raise questions about cutting, and trade wisdom and experiment results. We love Scully, Neumann, Presto, & Rek-O-Kut lathes and Wilcox-Gay Recordios (among others). We are excited by the various modern pro and semi-pro systems, too, in production and development. We use strange, extinct disc-based dictation machines. And other stuff, too.

Left right phase issue

So I'm making progress with getting my embossed records to play on almost any deck now however I have a problem, when I play them on a crosley sapphire needle they play fine when it's a diamond magnetic cartridge on a regular deck I get the audio seeming to sweep left to right back and forth. Not sure why this is happening, but I'm thinking it's the mounting system I have to my gantry, it's not fancy but there is side to side movement. Perhaps this is the cause, any help is appreciated

Cheers

Hi,

Can you post a sample? One thought prior to hearing anything: Is it possible that the cheap Crosley has a conical stylus and the more expensive unit is elliptical? In the first case, the tip geometry is able to track both walls of the embossed groove while the other ends up slopping around on the bottom of the groove and reads only one wall at a time? Remember that embossed grooves are more U shaped rather then the V shape you find in a cut groove.

might be off center holes, or the result of varying depth during embossing
